WASHINGTON (AP) — Sixteen Democrats who’ve opposed Nancy Pelosi’s quest to become speaker released a letter Monday saying they will vote for “new leadership” when the House picks its leaders in January, underscoring a significant threat to her effort to lead her party’s House majority in the next Congress.

The letter’s release suggests that rather than spending the next six weeks focusing on a fresh agenda to present to Americans, House Democrats could be consumed with a bitter and attention-grabbing internal leadership fight.

Again, Alex Occasional-Cortex is too young to be Speaker (praise kek).

Is there an age requirement for Speaker of the House? I can't find one. And the speaker doesn't even have to be a member of the House of Representatives.

There are no age requirements to be Speaker of the House. So our gal Ocasio-Cortez is eligible for the position. In fact, I think she should get it, as she has many days of experience under her belt.

But since Ocasio-Cortez is under 35, she’s not eligible to be president. So I guess a Speaker Ocasio-Cortez would be skipped over on the presidential succession list.

Not to worry - Diane Fineswine will get each of them up against the wall like she did to Murkowski and make sure Nancy is Speaker.

letting Pelousy get anywhere near any visible seat of power again would be the death of the D party
insofar as America’s voters are concerned

many D reps realize this

let’s see if they manage to get their ship together and select someone more acceptable to the country (and maybe more photogenic, too?)

Does anyone want Occasional-Cortex to be third in line for the Presidency?

Does anyone really want Pelosi to be third in line for the Presidency?

There’s no age or number of terms requirement, if O-C has the votes she can be speaker.

You don’t need to be a member of the House to be Speaker.

The member can elect anyone they want.

Can the republicans just vote “present” on this and sit on their hands? I’d kinda prefer to watch the democrats eat themselves like they’re crab legs on a seafood buffet just for the sheer entertainment value. I know the Speaker is the third-in-line but I’m selfish that way (and deniability is a good thing in this situation).

There are 435 seats in the house, so Pelosi needs 218 to win election as speaker.

The latest tally shows 232 House seats for the Dems, 200 fo the Rs, with three undecided. If those three races go according to how they are leaning now, it will be 233 seats for the Dems, 202 for the Rs.

By my count, 233 - 16 = 217

So 16 defectors leaves Pelosi exactly one vote shy of what she needs. That may be signficant if they all are firm. Pelosi could reach out to make a deal with Republicans for a vote or two, but that would probably put her in an untenable position with her own party.

More likely, she makes a deal with a handful of the 16 to give her some margin. But it’s possible that things get interesting in the next week.

Nancy Pelosi will “win” thru bribery then literally have the locks changed on the doors to the offices of those that opposed her as she has done in the past.

The Speaker is third in line to the presidency. The president must be at least 35 years old by the time of the election.
