Canadian air force running short of pilots, jets: watchdog

OTTAWA - The Canadian air force is increasingly running short of combat-capable fighter jets and pilots and government attempts to address the problem have only made it worse, the nation’s top watchdog said on Tuesday.

The report is another blow to a decade-long, trouble-plagued attempt by successive administrations to replace Canada’s CF-18 jets, some of which have been flying for almost 40 years.

“National Defence (defense ministry) has not done enough to manage risks related to Canada’s fighter aircraft fleet ... until a replacement fleet is in place.”

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said in a statement that Ottawa would launch new initiatives to recruit and retain pilots and was also moving to upgrade the CF-18s.

That was then. Over seventy five years ago. Those men and that Canada are long gone.

Put wings on Zambonis.

They fly above enemy planes and lay a flat sheet of ice on them.

You could even make them stealthy by tying a Polar Bear to the front.

“They cannot competently own military equipment and their men are universally pussies.”

Where the hell did you dream up either of those? They generally aren’t involved in constant wars like we are, but they have a very long track record of the opposite on both accounts. They build, operate, and maintain military equipment. AR-15 variants, icebreakers, aircraft, etc. Usualy things centered on their fairly unique needs.

As for being pussies, I bet a greater percentage of Canadian men run icebreakers, drive ice road trucks, log, drill oil, farm, mine, build pipelines, fish commercially, etc than we have doing so here.

You just made yourself look rather stupid with that comment.

It was said to provoke Canadians.

Provoke them to action.

Good question. Part of the answer is the Liberal party has never been the friend of the military - starving our good troops for decades.

The American problem is illegal immigration. Our is the LEGAL importation of so called Syrian refugees.

Yes, sad that some think this about Canadian troops. Nothing wrong with our troops. The problem is they are totally abandoned as far as being properly equipped.

And, THERE is the problem in a socialist, snowflake society...

Just sayin’...

Looks like someone forgot about the submarines they bought from Britain. A truly incompetent equipment deal by the Canadians. Then there were the uniforms that faded after a year of use and $550,000 for a ‘stealth’ snowmobile with a range of 15km (less than 10 miles).

Despite aging aircraft and ships, they did come up with three quarters of a billion dollars for a new headquarters in Ottawa.

Do you realize how much of an asshole statement that is? Your ignorance knows no bound. Who did you serve with? Crickets!

Tell that to all the families that lost loved ones in Afghanistan. Plain to see you never served!

Must have been electric?

Kudos to them. Do suppose Canadians feel for American parents? The fact of the matter is Canadians are very condescending and insufferably contemptuous of Americans.

They are not 40 years old. I helped train Canadian pilots at NAS Lemoore in 1985 through 1987. Their oldest aircraft are at most 32 years old. While the airframes have lots of use it would be time to upgrade their fleet to F/A-18F’s or even better the newest F-15SE Silent eagles or F-15X Super Eagles.

How old are the used ones they are buying from Australia? They are F-18 A and B models.

Byers said he’s not sure whether defence officials have an accurate picture of Canada’s actual needs. Perhaps, he added, they have an obsession with high technology.
“I can’t help but wonder whether they’ve been watching too many (James) Bond movies.”

“I would advise you not sharing your opinion with the brave Canadians who flew with RAF during the Battle of Britain, nor with the gallant Canadian’s who waded ashore on 6 June, 1944..”

For the hundred or so of them left, you’re quite correct. The modern Canadian military is a joke.

Don’t get fooled by our left wing media in Canada. If it were the case, you would not have tens of thousands of ‘snowbirds’ heading to the southern United States to get away from our winters.
