Australian nationals convicted of terror offenses would be stripped of their citizenship if the government believes they are entitled to apply for residency from another country, Prime Minister Scott Morrison proposed on Thursday.

Australia, a staunch U.S. ally that sent troops to Afghanistan and Iraq, has seen a spate of attacks by home-grown militants in recent months, including a stabbing attack in the country’s second largest city less than two weeks ago.

Morrison proposed allowing the government to weaken current constraints that permit terror convicts to be stripped of their Australian citizenship only if they are already dual nations and they have been sentenced to more than six years in prison.

“This is something that can’t be tolerated, and for those who would engage in this sort of activity, and they have citizenship elsewhere or we have reason to believe they [can] do, they can go,” Morrison told reporters in Sydney. …

Should be a no-brainer, whether in Australia or here in the U.S. Anyone who attacks fellow citizens of their own country because they wish to destroy that country is the very definition of a traitor, and should not only lose their citizenship but be executed.

Attacking your own is something that even animals know is anathema. Fully agree with you.

if the government believes they are entitled to apply for residency from another country

One of those clauses that makes little sense upon examination. They created the problem and it's theirs, not the country they betrayed. Australia owes them nothing. To say otherwise is like saying you owe cancer cells a new liveable situation when you drive them out of your body with chemo.

It is probably for compliance with the UN convention on statelessness. The US is not a party to that but Australia is. Their postwar era politicians no doubt failed to anticipate problems like future politicians deliberately admitting hundreds of thousands of moslems to terrorize the community, while taking advantage of laws intended to protect legitimate war refugees to shield themselves from consequences.

Agreed in full and without reservation. Terrorists are already dual citizens: of Hell. Let them relocate there.

‘home-grown’ is a misnomer.

“Terror-offenses” likely includes exhorting others to commit terrorist acts, conspiracy, aiding and abetting, material support, etc. Hopefully the PM wants to use law to round up and head out such offenders to Islamistan before-the-fact, and does not fantasize that the threat of deportation will have deterrent value.

But like everything else here, they’ll just get a stern talking to and allowed to carry on.

Then they’ll sue claiming that the people who gave them a talking-to violated their civil rights, and some judge will give them an apology and a cash payout, singlehandedly overturn the law that applied to them, and give the public a lecture on ‘racism’.
