Nope and respectfully Trump is getting bad advice here. The Saudis killed 3000 Americans and have been spreading their hate through building of Madrassas in the US.
It is? They are the ones spreading domestic terrorism by funding radical outlets in the US.
All wrong about Iran
Indeed, we have never made them pay.
Indeed and it seems to me 90% of the people on this site have been firmly anti-Saudi for some time, until recently,
Then keep your friends close...
And your enemies closer
Its about controlling geographic and financial access to the heart of the worlds energy markets
Do we prefer Iran and Russia?
Do we balance them by allying with the Saudis?
Or leave a vacuum to be filled by blood and Islamic terrorism?
If we abandon our relationship with Saudi they will find another arrangement
As will every other country in the world that sees us as capricious manipulable and unreliable
Saudis are NOT our friends, nor have they ever been. They’re using us to defend against Iran.
I say let both of them fight it out.
[We only have one true friend in that region and even their interests dont always line up 100% with our own.]
Now, Israel’s not our only dependent. Every country that leans on us to stay independent of its neighbors is our dependent. I’d say that’s at least dozens of countries, including all of the oil-producing Gulf kingdoms, which would be provinces of a single country without American protection.
In this country, we have neo-conservatives, who want to reform allied and/or non-hostile dictatorships. The problem with their reforms is that many of these countries become hostile to the US, whether they ultimately end up as hostile dictatorships or hostile democracies. Cuba, Iran and Nicaragua are instances where our pushing for reforms led to hostile dictatorships.
But at least there’s a kind of logic to what neo-conservatives want - they are idealists who want to see democracy installed worldwide. Whereas Pat Buchanan’s post-Cold War hobbyhorse has been to insist that we be extra-nice to hostile countries like Iran, Russia and Syria. Pat seems to have adopted the left-wing stance of appeasement, but from what is ostensibly the right wing. I think Pat is just getting senile in his dotage.

You think its smart for a Democrat congress to take over US foreign policy and cut ties to Saudi over a pretense such as this?
if so, don’t turn your back on them...
Nations do not have friends. Nations have common interests.
Over there a friend is just someone you haven’t stabbed in the back, yet.
There is still room for calling out rogue players in officially friendly countries. They should expect consequences from high treachery.
“You think its smart for a Democrat congress to take over US foreign policy and cut ties to Saudi over a pretense such as this?”
Wow. You think it’s smart to jump to conclusions? Who said anything about a Democrat congress?
what would be a better option?
What a stupid question.
We don't have "friends". We have interests.
Not praising the Saudis at all and not excusing it for the sake of the military industrial complex.
Just say that neither Turkey nor the Saudis are true friends of the United States and both have acted in bad faith for years/decades. And add that the US is not going to escalate anything over the death of some terrorist financier and sympathizer.
Long term: Toss Turkey from NATO (or dissolve NATO) and stop selling equipment to the Saudis, as well as shutting their Madrassa financing operation in the United States.
A religious rivalry between Turkey and Saudi Arabia dating back to the Ottoman empire.
Official Saudi government policy, or government officials and Royal Family members backing them on their own?
