Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz said Sunday he expects special counsel Robert Mueller's final report will be politically devastating for President Trump, but said he does not believe it will criminally implicate the president.
"I think the report is going to be devastating to the president. And I know that the presidents team is already working on a response to the report," Dershowitz said on ABC's "This Week."
"The critical questions are largely political," he added. "When I say devastating, I mean it's going to paint a picture that's going to be politically very devastating."
Dershowitz argued that Mueller is unlikely to accuse Trump of crime, but will instead lay out the facts of the case. He suggested that the president is more legally vulnerable in matters related to his business.
Dershowitz, who regularly appears on cable television and defends the president, said it remains to be seen whether acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker will make the special counsel's final report public. If he does, it will likely be released in tandem with a defense from the president's legal team, Dershowitz said.
Trump has repeatedly decried the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt," and claimed that the special counsel and his team have conflicts of interest. He has not elaborated on the latter claim.
The president's legal team last week submitted written answers to some questions from Mueller, but Trump has indicated he is unlikely to sit for an in-person interview with the special counsel.
Mueller's investigation has thus far yielded four guilty pleas from former Trump associates, and he has obtained indictments against more than 20 Russian nationals for their alleged efforts to influence the 2016 election.
I’m not buying it. A government financed political hit piece is not going to go over well with anyone but the cnn and hill types.
Dirtyshitz is just shilling for Hitlary! Hey Dirtyshitz, how about we get all the crap on you banging underage girls down in the Dominican Republic released too?
The Dems have been trying to pry into the inner workings of President Trump’s businesses for years.
They’ll use Mueller’s report as an excuse to unleash a flurry of subpoenas forcing Trump accountants to testify before their Star Chambers.
"Devastating!!!!!"
So I guess he thinks it's so obvious that he doesn't actually have to say what it is.
What more can Mueller say that hasn't already been leaked to the press? They've already tried to destroy him politically, and delegitimize his Presidency these last two years. Hopefully they've thoroughly blown their "politically devastating" wad.
“Dershowitz usually has a pretty good take on things, but on this one I think he’s off the mark.”
When Dershowitz gets the bit in his mouth he starts arguing like he’s a combination defense attorney slash PR-Consultant. He’s basically framing the worst-case scenario so that when the real report comes out, it’ll be a yawner. And “D” will then say he predicted that all along.
Mr. Alan must be joking.
The base (and probably everyone else) is wise to the anti-Trump lies and fabricated stories and personal attacks that have hit the press and airwaves since he announced his intention to run.
Ain’t nothin’ Mueller can say or do that will hurt this President one bit.
Well, they are certainly never going to give us a spec of mercy. We’d better realize that. And I include freezing our bank accounts, pensions, Social Security, etc.
So, you are right. Separation is the only solution without bloodshed.
Dream On! Hillary screwed Bernie and a Bernie Bro fought back.
Do you still need a vowel?
I think he feels that many of President Trump’s “friends” have turned on him because they were said to cooperate.
I bet that the “cooperation” gave Mueller NOTHING.
I hope I am right.
Excellent point.
And how many ham sandwiches?
I'm not buying it either, especially since the House Dems have already stated they plan on continuing to investigate Trump's Russian collusion, despite Mueller not finding anything.
I’ll vote for Trump again, just the same.
Trump is a businessman, he has dealt with many countries throughout the years, Russia, Saudi Arabia, you name it I think he’s had business dealings with them..if Trump wanted to hack Clinton’s emails he didn’t need to get Russians to do it, he could have hired a pimple faced American kid to do it for nothing
“Letting”? Yes, might already qualify as “over”, the question is why?
“Dershowitz usually has a pretty good take on things, but on this one I think he’s off the mark.”
All he says is that there won’t be criminal charges. Other than that he gives us no clue. I think he just needed to do some writing per his contract with his employer.
Where are you from?
“I think we’re about done with politics now.”
Yeah, where are you going now?
Well, Corsi is singing, and Roger is going to prison, and the Trump campaign team met with Russian intelligence at key moments and Trump publicly asked them to hack Clinton, and the Russians reported back they were doing it, and what they were finding and they were encouraged to continue and that’s just what’s in public.
