MEMPHIS - Ask Memphis residents and they might say that President Donald Trump got this one right: this is the best job market as far as many in this majority black city can remember.
For single mother Latasha Harwell, it has meant finally landing a full time job as a medical assistant, one with the regular 9 to 5 hours she needs so she can care for her kids. Chiquita Clayton says she has an open offer to move from part-time to full-time work at a FedEx warehouse; forklift driver Kendrick Jefferson got $3 dollar an hour more for switching employers.
Unemployment in Memphis hit a post-crisis low of 3.5 percent in April. It has since crept back above 4 percent, though partly because of more people joining the labor force.
But with poverty rates here still among the highest in the country, workers, employment advocates, and government officials also say that is only half the story. For this good spell to truly matter to black Americans, they say, it will need to continue for years to come.
In all, employment in transportation and warehousing in Memphis climbed to more than 53,000 last year from around 50,400 in 2014, with more than half the new jobs going to blacks.
The question is how long it can all last.
Reid Dulberger, president of EDGE, a Memphis economic development group, said he was worried that automation will eventually eliminate many of the brawn jobs giants such as FedEx and Amazon now rely on to move tens of millions of packages in their warehouses.

They are moving millions upon millions of packages every single day! Order a toothbrush today and have it at your door within 48 hours (Amazon Prime shipping).
This was not possible in 1988.
“...he was worried that automation will eventually eliminate many of the brawn jobs giants such as FedEx and Amazon now rely on to move tens of millions of packages in their warehouses.”
It will eliminate many non-”brawn” jobs too, and not just those held by blacks.
This is pretty good planning.
Fake news.
Now Democrats are talking the economy down. On cue.
Whose mother was eating lunch when she named her.
The Synagogue of Satan strikes again.
“with more than half the new jobs going to blacks”
Wait. Isn’t that racist? Where’s the diversity?
Is this guy saying that blacks are incapable of improving their lot and will forever be dependent upon government for subsistence? Doomed to the government plantation forever?
The KKKrats cheated their way into control of the House.
Black Americans are screwed.
In other words Reuters is saying Democrats will drive Blacks back into poverty and the world will be right again. Don’t you just hate these people?
Latasha, Chiquita, Salacious
Well that's not fair, are Blacks 50% of the population? Sounds like Blacks are getting back to work, fabulous for Blacks, bad for Dems.
I really think the President and others in his inner circle should do fewer rallies in rural Amefica, and focus almost exclusively in urban, less affluent areas.
You want blacks to understand there is a way out of the Democratic plantation? Go directly to them!
Their minds have been poisoned by years of Jackson and Sharpton propaganda, and need some major detox.
President DJT did it for them; why not make blacks and browns understand that? Don’t leave it to the race baitors.
Well Memphis is 63% black and Shelby, its situate county, is 53% black.
More than half the people in the Memphis area are Black.
Nothing is guaranteed to last. The question is how adaptable you are. If you cant adapt to change, that wont work well. Personally, I should know. So I dont underestimate the challenge that can represent.Businesses exist to gain credit for benefiting people who can and will express that credit in cash or other material form. But it is hard to do so if you invest indiscriminately in buggy whip production skills when automobiles are the coming thing. And the culture of the company that makes buggy whips may not translate into a culture which can efficiently make (better and better) automobiles.
Perhaps the education of the young needs to be directed not only at marketable skills for today, but also towards the ability to adapt to different opportunities as they may present themselves tomorrow.
Automation looks like a large threat but, at the same time, a huge opportunity to boost the standard of living by accomplishing more. The trick is to simultaneously control the tendency to destroy
jobsthe meaning of the lives of people who perforce invested their ability to be useful into a specific field of endeavor - and whose ability to diversify is (inevitably) finite.
Its not dependent on brawn, blacks are as smart as whites and can learn new skills, and it has been shown that automation actually creates jobs.
The Fed seems hellbent on cutting it short.
