But with poverty rates here still among the highest in the country, workers, employment advocates, and government officials also say that is only half the story. For this good spell to truly matter to black Americans, they say, it will need to continue for years to come.

THEN STOP VOTING FOR DEMOCRATS!!!!!!!

Unemployment in Memphis hit a post-crisis low of 3.5 percent in April. It has since crept back above 4 percent, though partly because of more people joining the labor force... In all, employment in transportation and warehousing in Memphis climbed to more than 53,000 last year from around 50,400 in 2014, with more than half the new jobs going to blacks.
With Maxine back in a chairmanship, it isn't likely to continue.

No, I don’t know about that.

I take it it wasn’t pretty?

Worries about “automation eliminating jobs” has been a familiar refrain at least since the early 1960’s, to my first hand knowledge. Maybe longer than that. I wouldn’t be holding my breath waiting for “automation” to finally come home to roost. it’s sort of like fusion energy, always “20 years from now” or like global climate disaster, “by the year 2100.”

If automation includes AI, I know of an AI program already written to replace certain positions at a large financial institution, with a gradual implementation planned over the next 3-4 years. This is just one instance of relatively near-term implementation, but I strongly suspect there are more.

But the point of my original post was that if and when it ever happens, it’s not going to just impact “brawn jobs” held by blacks - as evidenced by the actions underway at the aforementioned financial institution.
