Manafort plea decision represents setback for Mueller
The Hill ^ | 27 Nov 2018 | MORGAN CHALFANT AND LYDIA WHEELER

The breaking down of Paul Manafort’s plea deal has dealt a blow to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

A witness to the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Jared Kushner, Donald Trump Jr., and a Russian lawyer predicated on damaging information about then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Manafort was seen as a valuable potential witness in Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

The decision to call him out as a liar effectively takes his testimony off the table, removing a valuable asset for the government. It comes after a lengthy trial where prosecutors won guilty verdicts against Trump’s former campaign chairman.

“They viewed him as giant prize and that’s why they were willing to take the risk of exposing parts of the investigation by going to trial,” said Seth Waxman, a lawyer and former federal prosecutor in D.C. “To lose the cooperation of Manafort is a devastating loss for the government.”

The government has accused Manafort of breaching his plea agreement by repeatedly lying to federal investigators. It asked a federal judge on Monday to move forward with Manafort’s sentencing just more than two months after he began cooperating.

Mueller’s prosecutors wrote that Manafort lied to the FBI and the special counsel’s office “on a variety of subject matters,” saying they would file a “detailed sentencing submission” to the probation department and federal court laying out the nature of his lies.

While the details are unknown, experts say the development signals Manafort is lying about something significant, though it’s not necessarily information that’s key to the Russia investigation.

Glen Kopp, a former assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said Manafort could have lied about a number of smaller items

“It is not, on its face, a positive development in terms of further investigation when you have someone you believed could be helpful,” he said.

The development means that Manafort’s testimony will unlikely be used to indict any individuals going forward. He is also unlikely to be called as a testifying witness at any trials, given that his credibility has been publicly called into question.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Too bad...

Well Mueller just pooped in his bed. Mandatory is no longer a witness he can’t be trusted. How did you allow that to happen Mr. “I am the smartness guy in the room.” ? Besides burning Manaforg Corsi is calling you out for wanting him to agree to perjury. Well he’s burnt too. So much fun.

Maybe someone has pointed this out previously but I don’t think Manafort is really lying. He agreed to cooperate but doesn’t have any info muleshit is interested in. He just won’t sign off on muleshits lies.

He said he would piss on Mueller if he were on fire. And he caught fire and Manafort didn’t piss on him.

Mueller needs a scapegoat. Manafort won’t cooperate. So says Mueller.

Mueller is running into a problem. He wants to convict and sentence in near secret, and that only works as long as everyone plays along. When people stop playing along and fight back, Mueller has to follow the rules like other prosecutors which makes him accountable. Given his history of bungling sensational cases, Mueller really wants to avoid explaining his actions on the record in front of a judge and jury. Trials work both ways.

The bigger issue for me is this:

Why doesn't Mueller cancel the plea deal?

I suspect it's because a trial would be a disaster for him.

Exactly. Everything he has done is built on a house of cards, going back to his time as the Director of the FBI, when Hillary was running her server. That this happened on his watch, disqualifies him as independent counsel because he is in a position to cover for his own mistakes. How’s that for a conflict of interest?

Here's my prediction:

Mueller announces in the next couple of weeks that Manafort's "untruthfulness" is the reason why all the charges against Concord Management (the Russian firm contesting the charges related to the 2016 election) must be dropped.

You heard it here first. :-)

That meeting in Trump Tower was for opposition research, which is perfectly legal.

Also, that “Russian lawyer” was a woman named Natasha Veselnitskaya. She was barred from entering the U.S., but then Attorney General Loretta Lynch gave her a waiver which allowed her to enter the country.

Why? In order to set up Team Trump? (yes). Was Loretta Lynch part of the “silent” coup attempt? (most likely yes).

This who Mueller “investigation” stinks to high Heaven.

Sounds like Manafort is not telling the lies the Special Counsel wanted him to tell.

I always figured on Manafort being a stand up guy and by now he is also a philosopher. A stoic. He is praying for sure and this keeps him enduring. Contrast him with that POS Mike Cohen who crumpled.

Yep, all true. Also remember that lying scum Simpson from Fusion GPS met with the same lawyer (and translator and oligarch) the day before and the day after the Trump tower meeting. When asked about it by the Senate, he said he didn't chitchat due to the language barrier.

Lying scum. He needs to fry, but probzbly won't.

Manafort made his own mess. I wish him nothing but the best of luck and the best outcome, but he was clearly caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Contrast to Podesta and a myriad others who did the same thing and are going scott free. There's no justice if only Manafort gets thrown in jail, but his jail time is quite proper result for the tax fraud that he was convicted of.

If Mueller says Manifort is lying then no doubt he is telling the truth. Mueller obviously wants someone to lie about the Trump Tower meeting because the truth is that it was a nothingbuger. Clinton’s people tried to set Trump up and failed. There was no collusion and thus no need for Mueller. He knew this going in. He was in on the frame.

He’s only there to protect the Clinton machine and try and run out the clock.

Read Dan Bongino’s book for more details. He has pretty much figured out and diagrammed the entire Bob Mueller enterprise. If only that imbecile Sessions had not recused himself.
