Nov 3rd, 2002; we were right on a 7.9 shaker 40 miles east of Tok, Ak. Three foot deep of everything that had been in cabinets, bookcases, and drawers. Woodstoves slid 10 foot across the floor. Well head cap in laundry room blew off and had a geyser hitting the 8 foot ceiling for a couple hours; imagine the ground pressure. The ground opened up in front yard and half expected to see the devil come crawlin out. All you can do is clean up and wait for 2 months worth of aftershocks. We didn’t feel this one too much here in Fairbanks, but it lasted about 15 seconds. My plott hound leaped off the bed ran around the house.

If this was a 7 how many times stronger was the 9.2 in 1964?

Alaska is part of the so-called Ring of Fire. I'm actually surprised there hasn't been way more big earthquakes and volcanic activity in Alaska in recent years.

I went through the a 7.0 earthquake.
1980 Azores Islands earthquake. Striking the Autonomous Region of Azores on 1 January, the 1980 Azores Island earthquake killed 61 people and injured over 400, causing severe damage on the islands of Terceira and São Jorge.
Stationed there as a USAF Sgt. I got a detail to be a spotter on a C-130 looking for boats that may have been swamped with possible survivors. Then for the next several days we went around Terceira Island in teems to help dig people out and make sure collapsed homes were made safe. I'll never forget an old man showing us the clothing that his wife had died in.

You may notice it was on New Years day. The locals were terrified that it was some sort of end of the world retribution.

At a depth of ~26 miles, the fault plane is probably the surface between the continent and the subducting oceanic tectonic plate. In other words, the fault plane is horizontal, as opposed to a San Andres quake where the tectonic plate motion is lateral, with a vertical fault plane.

Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake Strikes Alaska: USGS

By Yereth Rosen

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - A magnitude 6.7 quake struck just south of Point MacKenzie, Alaska on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake had a depth of 26.7 miles (43 km) and its epicenter was located 7 miles (11.4 km) from Anchorage.

Although the National Weather Service initially said there was no tsunami danger, a few minutes later the agency said on Twitter that there was a warning in place for Cook Inlet.

From AP

Alaska averages 40,000 earthquakes per year, with more large quakes than the other 49 states combined.

Southern Alaska has a high risk of earthquakes due to tectonic plates sliding past each other under the region. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the Pacific plate is sliding northwestward and plunges beneath the North American plate in southern Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands.

On March 27, 1964, Alaska was hit by a magnitude 9.2 earthquake, the strongest recorded in U.S. history, centered about 75 miles (120 kilometers) east of Anchorage. The quake, which lasted about 4½ minutes, and the tsunami it triggered claimed about 130 lives.

1980 was a bad year for earthquakes. I felt the Irpinia earthquake ~(7.0) while stationed in Naples, Italy. The epicenter was about 60 miles away from my apartment. The chandelier was swinging and objects were moving on the kitchen table and I lived on the ground floor. The death tool and injuries were bad. It occurred in a mountainous region with no building codes. The death toll was at least 2500. After shocks continued for some time and damaged many buildings in the Naples area.

If this was a 7 how many times stronger was the 9.2 in 1964?,p>I believe the Richter scale is exponential. So it is a yuge difference.
The Richter scale is logarithmic, meaning that whole-number jumps indicate a tenfold increase.
Just like the decibel scale.

I found an explanation to my question and still confused. It said an 8 scale is 10 times stronger than a 7. So a 9.2 would be 1200 times stronger than a 7?

Or would that be 22 time stronger?

My head hurts.

I think it is easier to see on a graph.

It exponentially increases on a curve which correlates with the power expended.
