An old friend was 16 and walking home to the Turnagain neighborhood during the Good Friday 1964 quake. It knocked him to the ground and he described the ground wave deformations as being like a 3’ chop on the ocean. He got bounced. He watched as a crevasse opened and his neighbor’s house fell in. Fortunately no one was home there. Can you imagine how terrifying that would be?

This quake was at a relatively shallow depth so the shaking would have been out of proportion to the Richter number compared to deeper quakes.

Anchorage Police: “There is major infrastructure damage across Anchorage” after earthquake, including “many homes and buildings are damaged. Many roads and bridges are closed. Stay off the roads if you don’t need to drive.”

I just got up at 9 and it had just turned light. By 4 it should be getting dark. Felt the quake as my husband some me up and we are over 400 miles from Anchorage.
