Indian police believe two American missionaries encouraged John Allen Chau to go to a forbidden island where he was killed by an isolated tribe he was trying to convert, a top investigator said Saturday.
Dependra Pathak, head of police in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, told AFP the suspects had left India, and that there was still no sign of the body of Chau -- who was killed last month in a hail of arrows fired by the Sentinelese tribe.
"We are investigating the role of at least two Americans, a man and a woman, who met with the man who went to the island," Pathak said.
"These other two, who have since left the country, were reportedly into evangelical activities and encouraged him to visit the island."
The police chief did not name the couple nor give details of the organisation they belonged to.
Pathak said investigators had traced the two Americans through calls made to Chau's telephone phone. The Americans had "local mobile numbers", he added.
Chau, 26, was killed on November 17 on North Sentinel island in the Andamans in an incident that has cast a new spotlight on efforts to protect one of the world's last "uncontacted" tribes whose language and customs remain a mystery to outsiders.
Outsiders are banned from going within five kilometers (three miles) of the Indian Ocean island to protect the tribe from outside diseases.
Police have so far arrested seven people, including six fishermen who helped Chau get to the island. The fishermen reported Chau's death, and have since been helping to pinpoint the beach where the American missionary-adventurer was killed.
"So far, we have already done three reconnaissance trips near the island."

Lets vote, guy was an attention grabbing idiot.
Who cares ?
Outsiders are banned from going within five kilometers (three miles) of the Indian Ocean island to protect the tribe from outside diseases...
So I’ve gotten killed here for saying this guy was selfish and did a stupid thing.
He may have spread an illness that may have decimated them.
The same reason we don’t want illegals coming in.
AND I didn’t know it was ILLEGAL to go there.
There are SO MANY in Africa and South America that could be changed by The Word.
Seems he threw away maybe 30 or 40 years of spreading the word.
But I can’t read his heart. His intentions may have been the purest.
I wish he had thought a little more though.
Yes, Americans do have a sense of humor. I am sure he needed a ton of encouragement.
Him, Him ....many here know the rest of this chant
I bet they are rather inbred on that island.
He went to Darwin Island and lost.
Well he did what he thought was best in his heart and we all gotta die of something, I guess.
“Well he did what he thought was best in his heart and we all gotta die of something, I guess.”
Lol, but that said he still has to get through the FReeper Darwin Tribunal. Death will not deter US from laying charge!
I CANT BELIEVE YOU JUST SAID THAT!!
One of the posts I got clobbered for was saying that he invented a new term “Religious Darwinism” :)
Great minds and all that :)
But I was really hard on the guy and caught a lot of flak.
In retrospect, I think he was young and a little brash and TERRIFIED when he wrote “i dont want to die”, when the realization finally hit him that this might not have been a good idea.
I wish he could have gotten out alive.
But it’s hard to survive a gazillion arrows aimed your way.
A central tenet of Christianity is that no one achieves salvation unless he knows Christ. However misguided we may think him, this man risked his earthly life in an effort to save the eternal lives of the savages who lived on that island.
The only savage was Chau...if someone intruded in your home and you killed them, i am sure you would be upset if somebody called you a savage.
It IS possible that he followed the leading of the LORD and was quite successful in HIS eyes. Scripture is full of apparent failures who were esteemed in GOD’S eyes.
But they will have complete understanding after they take their last breath.
Maybe some guy in the village is asking “why’d we kill this guy?” and it will start a movement.
It’s kind of hard to understand how they came about not wanting intruders if there never were any.
How did they already know illegals were bad news? :)
I don’t like that two other folks told him it was a great idea but weren’t around to do it with him.
But I just don’t think Jesus would have gone to an area where they WOULDN’T understand a word he says, and he was TOLD they would kill him before he even reached them.
No I’m sorry.
He was an impetuous fool. Like many young folks are.
To thine own self be true.
I cannot fake what I think to please others here.
It is fair to no one.
He wasted his life is MY OPINION.
I respect yours just as much.
And YOU may well be right.
I’m wrong all the time lol
This man did not "risk" his earthly life, he threw it away. There are many martyrs in the history of Christianity who have ventured unto places where there was a possibility that they may be killed. And they were. However, this young man ill-advisably went to a place there was a virtual guarantee that he would be killed. Their policy was crystal clear: "Do not come here!" they said. "If you come here WE WILL KILL YOU."
He went there and, true to their word, they killed him.
There is such a thing as the Christian virtue of Prudence. This poor young man was not practicing it. May he rest in peace.
His friends last words were “ we’ll be behind you the whole way”.
FR doesn't have a god.
Many of the individuals who post to FR believe in God, so much so that FR had to create Caucuses to limit arguments between members with different views on God.
About the only things that most FR members seem to agree on is the 2nd Amendment and that humanism is bunk.
It’s ridiculous how many people think their opinion of this young man matters. What matters is what God thinks.
Jesus overturned tables and chased the religious zoo from the temple courtyard. He disturbed the authorities far more than this young man ever could have.
This young man’s death also reveals exactly how to get the media to support protecting our southern border. All we have to do is fund a few thousand missionaries from South and Central America to come up here and preach against homosexual pervasion and abortion. The Democrats and media (ok, I’m being redundant) will call for a full-scale war and the use of nuclear weapons if necessary.
Idiotic. Besides, you don’t even have to save savages. They are like children under the age of accountability, or morons.
Just ship em some blankets and be done with it.
