Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday night confirmed she will pay her interns at least $15 an hour.
Time to walk the walk, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. Very few members of Congress actually pay their interns. We will be one of them.
Her message came after The Washington Post confirmed with her chief of staff that she intended to pay her interns the amount.
Her tweet comes the day after Ocasio-Cortez called for lawmakers to increase pay for their interns and staffers.
The rising Democratic star, a self-described democratic socialist, tweeted Monday that she visited a restaurant in Washington where she met several staff members who also work on Capitol Hill.
"This is a disgrace. Congress of ALL places should raise [Members' Representational Allowances] so we can pay staff an actual DC living wage," she wrote.
It is unjust for Congress to budget a living wage for ourselves, yet rely on unpaid interns & underpaid overworked staff just bc Republicans want to make a statement about fiscal responsibility.
A 2017 report from non-profit group Pay Our Interns found that in the Senate, 51 percent of Republicans and 31 percent of Democrats pay their interns.
The study found that in the House, just 8 percent of Republicans and 3.6 percent of Democrats pay interns.
Both chambers included funds to pay interns in appropriations bills earlier this year, set to take effect in 2019.
LOL!!!
Apparently Freddie Mercury’s daughter (he DID do girls as well), learned the “fellowship” angle and will play to that.
Of course she will seeing as its not her money she's paying them with. Hell, why not $30 or $40 dollars an hour. With Socialists the skys the limit.
Seriously, does she believe $15/hr is a "living wage"?
Then she’s gonna need to really come up with $30 per hour, “at least”.
Give her credit. At least she is willing to live up to her own misplaced convictions.
Unlike totally hypocrites, a.k.a. Chuckie Schumer.
Wasn’t Maj. Nelson foolish all those years? lol
"...At one of our dinners, Milton recalled traveling to an Asian country in the 1960s and visiting a worksite where a new canal was being built. He was shocked to see that, instead of modern tractors and earth movers, the workers had shovels. He asked why there were so few machines. The government bureaucrat explained: You dont understand. This is a jobs program. To which Milton replied: Oh, I thought you were trying to build a canal. If its jobs you want, then you should give these workers spoons, not shovels...
Where is the commie going to get the funds? Or is her staff going to be smaller than other congressional staffs?
Seems to me she could and should be even more generous, like maybe $30/hr ($15 wage / $15 reparations). After all, it’s not like it’s her money or anything. “Just pay it.”
True. They would just confuse her.
Its not only the wealthy. And internships should be in every field. Unpaid is fine. They are better schooling than school.
My son has them in his field of music, and you learn a LOT about the biz, meet the right people, hopefully get a job after college. My friends son is doing it in sports, working as an intern for a pro ball team. No one is wealthy. The Capitol is a great place for people going into law or politics.
Internships are only for people enrolled full time in a 4-year institution. That is the only shame; they should be for everyone qualified. But internships are arguably more valuable for a college student than his classes!
If they’re gonna have unpaid internships they should take the minimum wage away too.
But how did your son support himself while he was on the internship?
lol
It was summer and he lived at home with us.
Exactly my point — those not so fortunate can’t keep up with that.
You are right. If you are on your own with no parents you couldnt pull off any internship. But think about it, if the kid has a parent, if internships were possible in any field the kid was interested in, it would be cheaper than college and get the kid ready for his first job in the field. The parent could, like when the kid was in high school, provide room and board, and there would be no COST to the training. Internship even without pay is a wonderful thing.
