‘Yellow Vest’ Protests Shake France. Here’s the Lesson for Climate Change.
New York Times ^ | December 6, 2018 | By Alissa J. Rubin and Somini Sengupta

PARIS - Vincent Picard describes himself as a “militant ecologist.” But when protesters took to the streets to express their rage over a planned increase in France’s fuel tax, Mr. Picard joined their ranks.

He acknowledges that the tax might encourage the conservation considered critical for a healthy planet. But with the nearest train station 35 minutes away, he has to drive to work every day.

“I am conscious that we have reached the end of fossil fuels and that we have to modify our habits,” said Mr. Picard, a 32-year-old pastry maker from northern France. But, he added, “You have to continue to live.”

Do you suppose the New York Times hypocritically uses fossil fuels in its own operations?

I suspect that 80% of the French were TOTALLY ON BOARD for ‘saving the world’, even 2 months ago, even if it costs them money.

Now that they’re seeing what that means to them and their lifestyle I suspect the number is 20%.

The difference: In the first case, the money was hypothetical, but the feeling of ‘saving the world’ was good, so why not support it. In the second case, the money is REAL, and thus the good feeling of ‘saving the world’ simply vanishes.

Reached the end of fossil fuels????

Yup, we're all out. There's no more. We're done.

Oh wait. "USGS: New Mexico's Permian Basin contains 46 billion barrels of oil"

“the feeling of ‘saving the world’ was good,”

They are so into this! I think it is because their lives have been fairly comfortable with all their socialism, and they probably feel a bit guilty and “saving the world” makes them feel virtuous. But now, this gas tax really hurts them.

Here’s the Lesson for Climate Change.

Turn up the heat more slowly next time, or the frog will jump out.

The gas tax is part of an effort started by France in 2014 to regularly raise the tax on fossil fuels to fight global climate change.

Someone needs to explain to us how imposing and raising taxes on fossil fuels 'fights' global climate change.

“saving the world” makes them feel virtuous.

It is pure holier than thou nonsense. All of the left’s core beliefs are based on false narratives.

“Only if it’s dead and decaying”

Yikes I got it backward. Live (not decaying) plants take in CO2 and emit oxygen. The conclusion is the same. CO2 is essential for plants which are essential for animals as they regenerate our oxygen.

But successfully passing carbon taxes is an increasingly delicate balancing act, with the biggest single obstacle still the pushback from the fossil fuel industry and its supporters.

They want to impose an ever expanding and crippling burden on the working and middle class which does nothing to stop man-made global warming.

CO2 is still being added to the atmosphere while increasing amounts of money are taken from families for an hypothesis.

This isn't a solution. It's government extortion.

If he realized “we have reached the end of fossil fuels”, then he is living in a fantasy land.

How ironic will it be when some study asserts that tear gas accelerates climate change?

Macron wants to get rid of those nuke plants by 2030, switching to “renewable” energy. This is about removing cars from French life completely (except for the elites and the apparatchiks serving them, of course.)

“Macron wants to get rid of those nuke plants by 2030,”

What Macron wants isn’t looking too relevant these days... ;-)

“switching to “renewable” energy.”

The official French plan is to move to 50% nuclear generation (from 75% currently) with the 25% replaced with renewables. That isn’t a terrible plan, since renewables are generally dispatchable.

“This is about removing cars from French life completely (except for the elites and the apparatchiks serving them, of course.)”

Not at all, since electric cars are now viable, and will become the norm within a few decades. They will end up cheaper to buy and operate and will be more reliable.

Internal combustion cars will be regarded the same way we regard steam-powered cars today - obsolete.

CO2 is not harmless, it’s wonderful! It is the fundamental building block of all organic matter including humans. These people are ignorant.

Wow. The process is photosynthesis. All organic matter is constructed from carbon dioxide. The plant consumes the CO2 from the air and turns it into cellulose.
