PARIS - France hunkered down for another wave of potentially violent protests on Saturday as embattled President Emmanuel Macron planned to address the nation next week over public fury at the high cost of living, senior allies said.
Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said the three-week-old yellow vest revolt had created a monster and vowed police would have no tolerance for violence, with much of Paris in lockdown and tens of thousands of police deployed nationwide.
Castaner warned that radicals would likely again infiltrate the protest movement - a backlash against high living costs but also, increasingly, a revolt against Macron himself, including his perceived loftiness and reforms favoring a moneyed elite.
After the Dec. 1 riots in central Paris and sometimes violent demonstrations in dozens of other cities and towns across France, the government offered a rush of sweeteners to soothe public anger.
It started by scrapping next years planned hikes to fuel taxes, the first major U-turn of Macrons presidency and costing the Treasury 4 billion euros ($4.5 billion).
But protesters want Macron to go further to help hard-pressed households, including an increase to the minimum wage, lower taxes, higher salaries, cheaper energy, better retirement provisions and even Macrons resignation.
But, mindful of Frances deficit and not wanting to flout EU rules, Macron will have scant wriggle room for more concessions.

Even students are getting into the act (for some of the most inane and unrelated reasons).
It seems that everyone outside of Paris is just p!ssed off about something. Per David Asman of Fox Biz (a few moments ago), 70% of Frenchmen not rioting support the riots.
70%.
And only 18% support Macron.
I imagine the Islamists in France are lying low. With the general population this stoked up, they could turn on a dime and attack the Moslems.
Macro n has been in hiding for a week.
There is some worry now about the effect on the EU election. Macron’s Party? I don’t see them getting more than 15-to-16 percent of the vote. Le Pen’s National Front might go past 35-percent (last time in the EU election, they took 25-percent). Whoever is advising Macron....probably needs to be fired.
Address the Nation next week? Is he encouraging violence and riots tomorrow? Shouldn’t he be out there talking now?
Hahaha. I laugh at LIB fools wherever and whenever they have problems.
Looks like some chickens are coming home to roost.
New riots are feeding off the existing riots though there is no connection in cause or issue.
Wait until the muzzies get in the game. And don't forget more popcorn when you go to the store.
Macron will address the Yellow Jackets from a well fortified
bunker. Afraid the French people will have his head on a platter.
He hasn't the slightest idea what to say. He's already deferred the gas/diesel tax thingy until next year and it didn't make a bit of difference.
The riots are getting some momentum.
Burn, baby, burn.
This is a more radical reaction to the same thing that got Trump elected here. They perceive what is going on, that the elite are financing a society where on the backs of the very people they seek to marginalize.
Further, they seek to make that marginalization permanent by importing a brown-shirt class to keep them quiet (muslims).
Eggzackly.
Too much cake there.
Marie Antoinette never said “let them eat cake.” It is a myth.
Students. What do they know?
> Marie Antoinette never said let them eat cake. It is a myth. <
I believe it was Hillary Clinton. The full quote being, “Let them eat cake while I con them out of even more money.”
