In all my school years, 1952-1964, the worst school lunch ever was in 1956 at AZTEC New Mexico. Every day it seemed to be a thin gruel or slop of macaroni and cheese. Kids were constantly throwing it back up on their trays.
I finally got mom to pack me a lunch.
All the other school lunches(Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arkansas) were GREAT! Aztec’s were just plain nasty.

For the most part, school lunches used to be real food. Chicken pie, green beans, corn, peas, pinto beans, vegetable soup, grilled cheese with tomato soup, cole slaw, turnip greens, baked beans, country style steak, mashed potatoes, square pizza, peaches, pears, yeast rolls, hot dogs, french fries, a pint of whole milk or chocolate milk, etc. If a kid wanted two milks, all he had to do was pay for the extra milk, no problem.
There weren’t contracts with fast food companies to bring in product and the cafeteria staff (lunch ladies) usually cooked most of the food instead of dumping it on warming trays. I can’t even remember how many fundraisers were held by selling the school cafeteria’s chicken pies, but those things were delicious.
I’m sure there was food wasted but there were also a lot fewer grossly overweight kids back then, even with ice cream that could be purchased for 15 to 20 cents at afternoon snack time.
I can’t remember if kids could opt out of any of the foods but I don’t think we could. The trays were passed down the line with the ladies ladling (or plopping) the food on the tray and you either paid at the end of the line when you got your tray, or you had your pre-paid lunch ticket punched (that you were responsible for and couldn’t lose).
Nope, school food is definitely not what it was when I was a kid and that’s pretty sad.

In fact, a previous generation of state sovereignty-respecting SCOTUS justices and a constitutional lawmaker had clarified that powers not expressly constitutionally delegated to the feds are prohibited to the feds.

So former FLOTUS, along with low-information school administrators, did not understand that feds have no constitutional authority to dictate policy for school lunches, or most other aspects of intrastate affairs.

There need to be investigations to find out where all that ‘lunch money’ went, because, based on pix, it certainly did not all go to Michelle Obama’s lunches.
Schools were received several $$$ per student/lunch, whereas the actual lunch content probably cost no more than 75-cents.

When I was in grade school, we had a morning recess and a long lunch break, which mostly involved wolfing down peanut butter sandwiches as rapidly as possible so we could start playing. I suppose all the kids with peanut allergies had died in infancy because I never saw anyone have a problem.
The main activity at both recess periods was playing war. There was a big hill in front of the gymnasium, which was a separate building. Half the kids went to the top and half to the bottom. Then the kids at the top charged down, leading to much sword fighting. When you were stabbed, you had to lie down and play dead until tagged by someone still alive on your team. I do not recall any permanent fatalities.
Some of the bolder kids would venture off campus, cross the road (we were well out in the country), and scour the creek for geodes, which we knew by their proper scientific name as "n****r heads." It was not until years later that we learned that this familiar geological term had been sadly misappropriated for another usage.
Our teachers approved of these activities, although I do not know what they called geodes. They also let us hang upside down on our six foot high jungle gym and compete to bounce each other off the teeter totters. The teachers did put a stop to snowball fights, so I suppose the collapse of Western civilization was already in progress.
About fourth grade, the boys switched to softball. I have no idea what the girls did. Nothing interesting, I'm sure.
My 8 year old bikes to the local deli every day at 730 to get him and his big brother chicken and bacon clubs
Every so often they give the burrito route

and it was stupid as Hell to deprive them of it
I had a red Schwinn Stingray, and my buddy had a black Schwinn Typhoon. Nowhere near as cool as that Pea Picker, though!
