Two school districts in Iowa will reportedly introduce mandatory classes about firearm safety into school curriculum starting next year.
Students enrolled in both the 7th and 8th grade at schools in the North Butler and Clarksville districts will be required to take part in a mandatory hunter safety course taught by the Butler County Conservation Board, Radio Iowa reported on Thursday.
The course will reportedly be implemented into the students PE curriculum.
High school students interested in learning about firearm safety will also reportedly have the option to participate in a voluntary class.
North Butler Superintendent Joel Foster told the local outlet that the classes are geared towards teaching students how to use weapons responsibly, how to respect them, understand its not a video game and those sort of things, that maybe well cut down on our chances of having a severe incident."
Foster also added that although he understands not all students are interested in hunting, the goal is to teach students lessons they can use in unexpected situations.
"If my 12-year-old girl is out babysitting a 3-year-old and the 3-year-old walks out of mom and dads bedroom with a handgun or a shotgun, she needs to know how to handle that," Foster said.
Parents can reportedly sign a form opting their child out of the class if they oppose having their child participating. There also will not reportedly be operable firearms or live ammunition present during the course.
Well that’s a great start

If done properly, this will be a positive program enhancing community safety.
Take this course in firearm safety nationwide, in urban schools in the heart of every large city in the US, and all the smaller cities and suburban districts across the nation. This will do so much more than restrictive “gun control” laws ever could, to curb and to smoke out, before they become a real threat, the individuals who should NEVER have hands on a projectile weapon of any kind.
Find these disturbed youth BEFORE they are a problem. It is like immunization of children against dread diseases.
A lot of Amish and Mennonites around there.
“Lead them by about this much.”
I recall having such classes in Iowa public schools in the ‘60s.
In 1940, this would be a no-news event...
I hope they’ll be able to be heard over the pearl-clutching.
The Iowa program is much more about hunting safety rather than firearm safety. It is a good class that many will find interesting.
So tens of thousands of illegals in Iowa will be taught to use firearms.
I prefer my criminals inept.
It was SOP to have firearms safety/hunter safety in 7th grade when I was a kid. And winter/snowmobile safety as well. But my school was kinda forward thinking on that because it also made swimming, boating safety and basic first aid required as well.

They should teach marksmanship in Chicago schools so there is a better chance of them hitting their targets rather than innocent bystanders.
In Summer 1954 I completed the new California Hunter Safety Training requirement, and I took it again in 1964 at age 20, but there were no suburban schools in the San Francisco area that participated in Hunter Safety Training or ROTC marksmanship.
I hunted regularly with my cousins in rural CA counties, and they had both at select schools.
Never mind. Valas eliminated it and the prick is running for mayor now.

We had an indoor shooting range under our bleachers for ROTC training in Phoenix back in 69. I look at this world and weep.
I had firearms training as part of high school ROTC, in the public schools.
Good news - my Dad got with a shop teacher and started a NRA safety course with videos and a set up for dry sighting to teach students to aim,,,also managed a few trips to the shooting range.......things were different in New York State in the ‘60s...
