I get the sense that Mattis has served under a long line of pompous poofters, and hasn't had a real commander in a very long time.
Along comes Trump who chooses him as his Secretary of Defense, and he continues operating in his usual prima donna fashion, not taking stock of the fact that Trump is a real executive who's had to get results in the real world.
In other words, a real commander, who doesn't have infinite patience for his insubordinate ways.

The primary Principle of War (in U.S. Doctrine) is that of the Objective. Can anyone explain to me the clearly defined, decisive, and attainable Objective that can now be pursued in Syria?
