The city of Baltimore spent a reported $250,000 dollars to purchase over 500 unwanted guns in a buyback program.
The Baltimore program was successful in that it collected over 500 firearms to be destroyed. It worked for two basic reasons.
First, it offered more money than most of the guns were worth on the open market.
Second, the state of Maryland has made it difficult to buy and sell guns legally and privately. There was little competition for the few guns brought in that were worth more than the government was offering. The inconvenience factor of finding a legal buyer, gave incentive to people who wanted to dispose of a gun.
Most of the guns turned in are those seldom used in crime. Paying $200 for semi-automatic .22 rifles that cost $99 and less when new (and are still widely available for less than $150) is stupid and counterproductive.
One gun collector in a wheelchair brought in a rusty old bolt shotgun barreled action. It might be worth $10 at a gun show. He got $100.

They are paying in cash!
I hate the term “buyback”. It implies the firearms once belonged to the government but they let us use them and now they want them back.
I always thought that I should get a plain white lockable trailer, get a large banner that says “Official ammunition disposal drop off point” and accept ammunition from those that were turning in their guns.
“No sir, we can not accept your firearm, but we can accept your ammunition.”

"...gun buyback..."
Or NUKE THEM if they don’t

Junk looking guns at that.
I wish they would have a buy back here! I’ve got some real junk that I would be afraid to pull the trigger on! Plus with the CASH paid I can quickly buy some plumbing pipe and make some cheap slam fire guns to also turn in for cash!
An extension of Hussein’s “Cash for Clunkers”. O-HOLE creation.
Baltimore has population of around 600,000. Gun ownership in Maryland is about 20%. That roughly computes to 120,000 gun owners in Baltimore who surrendered 500 guns for a grand total of 2.4% of Baltimore guns turned in and these were probably of the best quality he said sarcastically. No, seriously, keep the momentum going and we’ll have a gun free America in a couple centuries. A delusion free America may take a trifle longer.

Not if the money goes to purchase a better gun!
I remember back when SKS were dirt cheap and the paperwork was almost nil:
Guys would hear about the “buyBACK” ahead of time, then they’d buy maybe 20 SKS’s, sell them “back” and turn a pretty good profit..!
What a great trick..!
Serves ‘em right.
NOW if you even APPROACH a Calif “buyBACK”, without visibly carrying a firearms or a container for a firearms they intercept you and almost threatend you with ARREST. (they think you’re there to try and buy guns)
They level of control and threats is really amazing.
The term buyback is a feel good liberal term just like giving back. Its designed to make people feel like its legit and the right thing to do.
It is designed to give the impression that everything is owned by the government. When they buy something, they are simply "buying it back".
The impression is everything comes from the government.
To Progressives, government is god on earth.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
