Environmentalists are threatening to sue French President Emmanuel Macron for eliminating stiff carbon taxes after a grassroots movement opposed to the measure spurred several mass protests.
Greenpeace and three other organization initiated a lawsuit Dec. 18 claiming France is not doing enough to tackle climate change. The organizations are giving the government two months to formulate a response, after which they will move forward with their lawsuit. The legal pursuit puts Macron in a bind.
The complaint comes less than a month after Macron dinged an unpopular gas tax that roiled activists associated with the so-called Yellow Vest movement. The anti-gas tax protest is a mix of left-wing and right-wing populist elements. One of the organizations leading the legal pursuit believes the protesters actually want a carbon tax.
What they [yellow vests] want first and foremost is social justice and financial justice. And there will be no social justice without action for the climate, In Our Common Interest President Marie Toussaint told reporters. Her group is one of the four non-government organizations seeking to sue France.
Global warming feeds on inequalities and strengthens them. It strikes the most fragile first. It is destroying our economy and our territories. So, it can be a process that can be done in parallel, Toussaint said. The best way to enact the carbon tax is to offset it with a subsidy for those who rely on transportation, she added.
Macron, for his part, promised to become one of the worlds leading climate warriors.

“The problem with pushing the fake boogieman of climate change as a means to encourage globalization is that their are some very real enviro-fanatics “
The very reason these very real enviro-fanatics exist is because of the pushing. If, instead, they “pushed” the idea that the moon was cheese and we needed to develop a large space rat to save the Earth from getting destroyed when the cheese rotted, then it would produce some very real moon-cheese fanatics. These people are fanatics, not because what they are fanatical about is real. They are fanatics because they are wired to be fanatics. They are the very real danger of focusing in on anything global and destructive. A certain number of people will glom onto it and focus on it to the exclusion of everything else. Ecological terrorists, animal rights protesters and Vegan “activists” are all in the same nut-ball category.
We’re going to sue you because we want higher taxes. The world has gone insane.
The EU is also mad at Macron, who was one of their big heroes until just recently. However, his concessions have made France miss the EU budgetary goals and increased its debt outside of EU limits, since France was supposed to be starting an austerity program. Bear in mind, btw, that the Yellow Vests are not exactly freedom fighters and actually want more socialist goodies - although their complaint against the enviro tax and the fact that Macron and his government buddies dont seem to be subjected to any austerity at all is justified.
But it simply shows you the unsustainability of any socialist system, country wide or region wide (EU).
Its not like the enviros will pay the higher carbon taxes or share the social burden of implementing their environmental policies.
Good luck with it. The climate change cult has its work cut out for it.
The yellow vesters should arm themselves and take out the folks filing the lawsuit.
Soooo... a tax rebate to subsidize a tax?
I have little sympathy for the Yellow Vest movement. They were all fine with global warming hysteria when it’s only affect was to demonize Americans. THEN they get all pissy when they find it has actual costs.
They say they love the environment but they really just hate their fellow humans.
Pretzel logic at its finest.
This is an utterly insane statement.
The Climate pays attention to human politics?
The premise, rather convoluted, appears to be this.
1. Industrialized nations became rich by using fossil fuels.
2. Fossil fuel use makes the Climate change.
3. Climate change makes poor nations poorer.
4. The solution is to make industrialized nations poor, and take some of their diminished wealth and give it to poor nations.
Premise number 1 is correct, in part.
The rest are simply warmed over Marxism disguised as eco-nonsense.
It is simply the left demanding: Give us money and power! We know better than you!
I thought France generates most of its electric power from nuke?
It does. Most people use fossil fuels for motor transport.
The entire premise is insane. France putting more taxes on fossil fuels will not matter, even a tiny bit, compared to the amount of carbon China continues to put out. Not even in the models the climate alarmists use.
It is all just a power grab by the elites.
You can justify the power to rule every bit of society, with the climate change agenda.
It is like early god/kings saying they needed to be in power to make the sun rise!
OK!! Everybody pay attention!
Lesson for today:
1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.
2. The sun is a giant nuclear furnace that controls the climates of all its planets.
3. The earth is one of the suns planets.
4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.
5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?
Government. That marvelous fiction by which everyone tries to live at the expense of everyone else.
Occasional Cortex says we should do it at night.
Just wait until the pink vests jump into the fray.
The Neanderthals and their lawsuits. It’s all getting tiresome.
That was the whole point, wasn't it? If the US complied with the Paris agreement and paid out trillions to every turd-world despot they would be sitting pretty because the agreement didn't affect them as disparately as it did the US.
Something tells me they’ll be LAUGHED OUT OF COURT.
Unlike the US, with our America-hating judges, most judges overseas do not hate their own countries nearly to the same extent.
