Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) told PJM that the federal government should conduct a study of reparations for descendants of slaves to be able to determine the best way to “repair some of the damage" that slavery has caused to the African-American community.
Jackson Lee became the lead sponsor of H.R. 40, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act, after Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) resigned from Congress.
The legislation seeks to “address the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States and the 13 American colonies between 1619 and 1865 and to establish a commission to study and consider a national apology and proposal for reparations for the institution of slavery, its subsequent de jure and de facto racial and economic discrimination against African-Americans, and the impact of these forces on living African-Americans, to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies, and for other purposes.”

If you want reparations, go first to the still existing African tribes whose ancestors caught and sold your ancestors. Both whites and blacks were first brought here as indentured servants also known as bond slaves. Some of my ancestors came here under indenturement to pay debts or to pay for their passage. The ALL did a 7-10 year indenturement during which the “master” was required to pay them a small amount, provide food and housing, and to teach them a usable trade so that at the end of their servitude they could be productive citizens and help to populate the colonies. The true keeping of slaves did not come about until the late 1700s.
perhaps she should redirect her reparations requests to 1) The British, French and Spanish governments who enabled slavery through 1812, and 2) the African countries that dealt in the white and black slave trade for eons.

Time for the blacks to pay back the Irish for about 10 more generations of hardship than theirs, and the others for all their quota preferences over the past 2 generations, which they have never had to compete, while others gave charitably to them. We want our reparations from the blacks, if we go that route.

I disagree. White slaves into the Americas were known to the founders. The 3/5 vote wasn’t written for African slaves, it included indentured servants and white slaves. Look at the Constitution for the 3/5 vote as it does not specifically state “black slaves”.

Liberals are relativists in the HERE AND NOW, and absolutists for dead and past, those things that cannot be changed. So yes, other places had/have it, and were worse. A conservative should know she can’t change the past, so does indeed judge relatively about the past. But we also know one can be “judgemental” about the present, call something bad or good, and demand action NOW.
