Gov. Newsom Points to California Exceptionalism, Challenges
U.S. News & World Report / Associated Press ^ | 1/7/19 | Kathleen Ronayne

California Gov. Gavin Newsom boldly declared his state a model for the nation Monday but said its leaders have failed to rein in the soaring cost of living and stem inequalities that are making it harder for people to achieve what he called the "California dream."

"We face serious challenges — some that have been deferred for too long," Newsom said in his inaugural address. "We face a gulf between the rich and everyone else — and it's not just inequality of wealth, it's inequality of opportunity."

Still, Newsom said it's California that can best defend U.S. values in the face of "incompetence and corruption" in Washington. He never mentioned President Donald Trump by name, but his speech was laced with sharp rebukes of Trump's policies, particularly on immigration.

"The future depends on us," he said. "And we will seize this moment."

DeBlasio is talking about covering 600,000 people for $100 million a year.

That math works out to $167 ANNUALLY per person.

I have been charged more than that at the local clinic to look me over when I allegedly had high blood pressure. I was with the Doc exactly 8 min & 34 seconds. Bill was $202. I paid $33 a month until it was paid off.

Here we go with the divide between them and the rich, yet the rats spewing this crap are rich but they don’t count

The future depends on us,” he said. “And we will seize this moment.”

But first we must seize the crap in the streets

Right on! Actually, first will be “seize your income” to pay for all the new social programs. The others on your list will follow shortly thereafter.

Worst of all will be “seize your mind.” If you don’t fall in line with the leftist orthodoxy about loving homos, trannies, climate change, and illegals, you are a pariah and must get your mind straight.

I spent a little time in California. Automatically took home 10% more money when I moved back to Texas. No state income tax. But we do have high property taxes. Can’t figure out how Tennessee can have no income tax AND low property taxes.

If they want to be leaders, trying being able to perform proper dam maintenance or fire control like the other 49 states can do.

What the F (sorry JR but you have to understand this calls for the hint of swearing) do you think your California Dream is today, Governor Newsom?

Who’s dreaming? Illegals, hoping for other people taking care of your kids for free, getting medical care for free, food for free, jobs on the side so you don’t even pay taxes that support all your free services???? And those are the hard working ones.

Some illegals here are only dreaming of another drunken night where they can get laid and drive home with no license, a gun in the car, and blood alcohol way over any limit. Maybe sell a little drugs too.

Are the homeless dreaming? I bet they are. One Guy freezing under the freeway overpass right now is probably dreaming of an eagle flying though a cloud of ice cream with three dinosaurs beneath him singing opera. Because he has schizophrenia. His other dream is to score some more oxys to make the night not as chilly. And to find a less traffic filled place to take a dump.

The wealthy are dreaming too, about donating to great causes to fight global warming, homelessness, saving the delta smelt, because you can hook up with other wealthy people at these galas. Also about their trips to their other homes in other places, and their portfolios doing better since they don’t need to put all their eggs in the California basket. Only the $10 million piece of property, which is chump change for them, they’ve got bigger things in NYC and China and the islands. They don’t care if CA goes down the tubes.

The only thing the middle class of all colors is thinking about in CA is how to survive or how to get the hell out.

Genius post. I wish everyone who loves socialized medicine can see it.

While it is true that many people will spend $0 on health care in a given year, it is not enough to bring down the average cost to $150 a year per person. That is ONE QUICK DOCTOR VISIT.

Although I work in Alaska, I have a home in Redding, north of Sacramento. I have been trying to get my wife to be willing to move out of California but she resists because of family and friends (and the fact she has lived there for 55 years).

My compromise that I hope she will accept is Northern Nevada. Out of Cali but still within 4 hours of family and friends.

Newsome may make the transition easier, now.

For $150, you will see the nurse’s assistant or maybe an intern for ten minutes. You sure won’t see the physician or even the physician’s assistant.

Much of California’s exceptionalism seems negative: Crumbling infrastructure, enormous debt, high taxes, rampant crime & homelessness, shrinking middle class, & a natural environment of drought, earthquakes, & fires.
