A professor who fooled prestigious journals into running absurd hoax papers, as a test of their bias, says he may now lose his job because of his actions.
Peter Boghossian was one of three people who collaborated last year to test the standards of various university disciplines, submitting papers loaded with left-wing buzzwords to journals in fields like feminism, race studies, queer studies, and cultural studies.
Many prestigious journals fell for their absurd hoax papers. A leading feminist journal published a section of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf that had simply been re-written with fashionable buzzwords. Another journal published a paper about “rape culture and queer performativity” in dog parks.

One of Boghossian's funniest satirical efforts was a proposal to create an academic field called "Grievance Studies" - encompassing any and all groups of people who have a political axe to grind based on their race, ethnicity, religion, sex, or sexual behavior. Needless to say, it didn't go over well with colleagues of his who make a living off what are effectively "grievance studies" under another name.

If there's one thing Leftist academics hate, it's somebody pointing out that their pretenses of scholarship are just a thin cover for a political agenda. I hope that Boghossian's term "grievance studies" catches on as a description of [Fill in the Blank race/ethnicity/sex] studies programs at elite universities.
“Four days before Christmas, Portland State University Vice President Mark McLellan emailed Boghossian that he had been found guilty of “a clear violation of the policies of your employer” for hoaxing the journals without first seeking permission from an “Institutional Review Board”.”
And the chances are 1 in 1,000,000,000 the board would have okayed that.
It’s very hard to have any optimism about the future, based on this kind of crap.

He took some flack for it, but it didn't destroy his career because unlike Boghossian, the field he was satirizing wasn't politicized. As I recall, Sokal had a reputation for being a political lefty, which probably is another reason he wasn't in any jeopardy.

If Boghossian was using university resources or their letterhead for the fake submission, the university probably has a case for reprimand or firing.

I don’t think they meant journal editors when they said “human subject”.
I suspect the intent of that rule was that they didn’t want a repeat of when blacks in Tennessee were injected with the Syphilis virus in some demented experiment, or something similar.

Really a sad thing too.
The only reason those studies still even exist is because they have to create new, meaningless non-terms to stay live.
On what grounds is there a case for firing him? University faculty are generally allowed to submit their work for publication in academic journals without any oversight and clearance by administration - in fact, I would guess that most have explicit statements to this effect in the name of academic and intellectual freedom. If Boghossian's colleagues are permitted to publish meaningless post-modern mumbo-jumbo and racial grievance rants masquerading as scholarship, he is equally entitled to write papers that expose those works of pseudo-scholarship as intellectual fraud.
