What are RIFs? I wish people would stop assuming that everyone knows what the initials stand for?

I think RIF is Reduction In Force. In other words, fire them.

What used to be called "Corporate Downsizing" but that didn't sound good to shareholders...which used to be called "laid off."

RIF = Laid Off (i.e. typically not "fired.").
