Democrats dismiss Trump Shutdown Offer (Before he even makes his speech [4pm ET] )
Axios ^ | 1-19-19 | Caitlin Owens, Jonathan Swan

Posted on 01/19/2019 11:56:56 AM PST by springwater13

Even before President Trump's shutdown remarks on Saturday, Democratic aides on the Hill were dismissing his planned shutdown compromise offer as inadequate.

As first reported by Axios, Trump was expected to make two offers to Democrats in exchange for $5.7 billion in funds for a border wall: Extend DACA protections for Dreamers, who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children, and extend the legal status of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. But hours before the speech, Democratic Whip Dick Durbin said in a statement: "I cannot support the proposed offer as reported and do not believe it can pass the Senate." "First, President Trump and Senate Majority Leader McConnell must open the government today. Second, I cannot support the proposed offer as reported and do not believe it can pass the Senate. Third, I am ready to sit down at any time after the government is opened and work to resolve all outstanding issues." — Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Il.)

A Democratic aide told Axios: "Dems were not consulted on this and have rejected similar overtures previously."And a House Democratic aide said: "Similar inadequate offers from the Administration were already rejected by Democrats."

"The BRIDGE Act does not fully protect Dreamers and is not a permanent solution." "This is not a compromise as it includes the same wasteful, ineffective $5.7 billion wall demand that shut down the government in the first place." "This cannot pass the House or Senate." "The President must agree to re-open government and join Democrats to negotiate on border security measures that work and not an expensive and ineffective wall that the President promised Mexico would pay for."

”Dreamers” will be pissed..they will say “Wait I thought Dems care about us”

They will NEVER abandon the Rats... don't kid yourself about that. The Rats will say Trump's proposal was a trap and they'll buy it hook line and sinker. Plus, they can't vote so what do the Rats care.

I tend to agree with you. When all is said and done, the DACA folks will realize that the Dems really don’t care about them except as a bargaining chip. They want to keep DACA kids as DACA kids so they can continue to use them to press the R’s for “stuff”.

Fine. The shutdown is now on the Dems.

This keeps up long enough and I’ll hit my retirement eligibility. It’s looking really tempting!

Hispanics will start voting GOP about the same time Blacks do, and it the same percentages.

Demonrats enslaved Blacks and a few short years later will curse the Republicans that freed them.
