Used to be two countries would sign a treaty to fend off a third country. Now they sign them to fend off their own citizens.

What makes this different from the 1963 Elysee Treaty?:

The Élysée Treaty was a treaty of friendship between France and West Germany, signed by President Charles de Gaulle and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer on 22 January 1963 at the Élysée Palace in Paris. With the signing of this treaty, Germany and France established a new foundation for relations that ended centuries of rivalry.

The post-war West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer made rapprochement between the historic rivals one of his priorities.[2]

The treaty called for regular consultations between France and West Germany on all important questions concerning defense, education and youth issues. It also requires regular summits between high-level officials, which implies that the Heads of State and Government have to meet at least twice a year and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs every three months, to ensure close collaboration between the two states

I would take it a step further.. it is support fir the concerns of your next door neighbor. The person who speaks your language, spends time with your children.

How do you counter populism?

Liberal fascism or as its called in some quarters...homo-fascism.

Bake that cake, import that refugee, pay those taxes, and don't dare voice a complaint when your daughter comes home from college with a mastectomy and a mustache.

Populism, like neocon, seems to have many definitions.
The relevant definition in this case, I think, is ‘appealing to the masses against the elites.’ I don’t see a connection to your issues.

So they can become what they were in the 1930s and 1940s again?

If France and Germany go to war,
having US troops in Germany will
be useless. Bring ‘em home now.

I think so.

Do you see transgender rights and mass immigration as popular issues?

Maybe I’m on the wrong forum...

Ah, I think I see our problem.
Populist has nothing to do with popularity.
