Tattoo artist can’t spell English words correctly, for get foreign languages. I used to wonder if the Chinese and Japanese tattoos weren’t off a Resturant menu. Instead of courage it means “ orange chicken.

My first thought as well. However, to be fair I know that Japanese do the same thing with English words. I have a charming picture of my then-quite young granddaughter next to a man in Tokyo whose t-shirt read “Go F*** Yourself” but the shirt was uncensored.

Asian words for tattoos do come from several sources including menus. Biggest problem is that most tattooists don’t speak the language they were given to ink on the customer meaning in many cases the tattoo ends up backwards. Also if the person is lucky it just spells out nonsense words. Some do end up with tats that are offensive words or insults when translated.
