After Trump exits office, President Pence will be challenged in 2020 by Chris Christie
The Star Ledger of Newark ^ | 01.31.19 | Alan J. Steinberg

Posted on 01/31/2019 9:44:14 AM PST by Coleus

On New Year’s Day this year, I predicted in a column published here that under pressure of various governmental investigations, Donald Trump will be compelled to resign from the presidency before the end of 2019. The recent disclosures regarding these investigations have strengthened my position.

Upon Trump’s resignation from the presidency, Vice President Mike Pence will become the president. Pence, however, will be a very poor reelection prospect in 2020.

Mike and Karen Pence, his wife, have a well-deserved reputation for extremism on social issues, particularly on issues affecting gay and lesbian voters. The Pences possess a “kook” factor they won’t be able to shake loose due to their advocacy of far-right social issue positions.

So the search will be on for an alternative 2020 Republican presidential candidate to Mike Pence. Given the ability of the Trump base to veto any such alternative, the Pence opponent must not be somebody identified as a Trump adversary. That rules out former Ohio Gov. John Kasich or Nebraska U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse.

The Republican who will emerge as the opponent to Pence will be none other than former Gov. Chris Christie, a man of irrepressible ambition who has never relinquished his presidential aspirations. And his service in the 2016 Trump campaign ensures his acceptability to the Trump base.

In case you’re wondering, this is not an endorsement. If you’ve read my commentary before, you know that no New Jersey Republican criticized both Christie’s tenure as governor and his failed 2016 presidential run more vehemently than I.

Yet, I must be dispassionate and divorce my personal views of Christie from any assessment as to his past performance and his future viability as a candidate for the White House.

Our side absolutely needs to think post-Trump. I guarantee the GOP will “mail it in” whenever President Trump leaves office (obviously and hopefully 2020). The freak show cast of characters are on display running up to 2020.

It’s just the way it is.

Sorry.

Economic conservatism is the better way to go.

The media controls people. Period.

There is a lot of rural gay people as well.

It’s a different country. People need to focus on building their lives and families.

Politicians can’t legislate morality unless it is VERY serious. Sorry.

The 1950s and 1980s are over.

Not that simple.

Social liberalism creates a vacuum that inevitably government fills.

The War on the Family is the reason for the growth of Government. If you don’t have a family to take care of you, the government will.

Um, no. If social degeneracy replaces traditional and Godly right & wrong, you will never have economic conservatism as an “alternative.” Social leftism/degeneracy is extraordinarily expensive and goes hand in hand with fiscal profligacy. Economic conservatism can ONLY work with social tradition/conservatism.

Trump will not resign. He will not be removed from office. He will run for re-election in 2020 and will win the nomination regardless of who challenges him.

I know we are supposed to revile Glenn Beck, but his 2013 segment about Christie & Obama meeting in Jersey City called “Boardwalk Bromance” was hilarious. This was when Glenn was still doing comedy. He had the two of them moaning,

“Ohhhh....I’ve been looking for some FATNESS for so long!”

“Ohhh..Mr. President, those photos of you and your abs...!”

Seriously, that was when conservatives learned not to trust Governor Crisco; this was their second meeting under the boardwalk.

No, no, no. President Trump exits triumphantly in 2025, following the election of Sarah Sanders in 2024.

“drank the water in New Jersey”

My favorite beer used to be Rolling Rock. Then they moved the brewery from Latrobe, PA to somewhere in New Jersey.

Tasted like dishwater after that. Never again.

Pence will run in 2024 and supported by the GOP. He will lose the primary because he will distance himself from Trump as Trump is leaving office and it will hurt him in the primary, I hope this doesn’t happen but very well could. The GOP will desperately try and nominate another Uniparty approved shill like Little Jebbie and they will fail. If they do manage to nominate the like the electoral beat down they receive will be earth shaking.

The GOP must embrace a conservative populist agenda or die and they must nominate a candidate who will fight the left whether its the congress, deep state or media, otherwise they can write their name down by the Whigs in American history.

Pence’s problem IMHO is that he’s too much of a gentleman to weather the blistering daily onslaught of attacks as Trump has.

And come they surely will.
