Also consider all the beneficial products invented by the moon program including synthetic fibers for many uses. These don't normally happen in the market economy.
As for living in smaller houses, using public transportation, etc. No thanks. Public transportaiton is a huge waste of public money not to mention energy. Take a look in WMATA (DC area) at all the mostly empty buses. A bus needs to be 1/2 full to achieve the efficiency of two people in a normal car.
Public transportation has to be provided for those who can’t or don’t drive cars. If people who could would use that instead of their own transportation, it could be cost efficient. And look at trains. When I took AMTRAK from Cleveland to DC to Baltimore and back, the trains were crowded, efficient, and reasonably priced. I submit it would be even more so if there were more scheduled trains throughout the country, as there are in the NE corridor. And cold fusion? An acquaintance of mine (who has passed away), proved that cold fusion was viable, back in the 1970s. Why didn’t it happen? Big Power didn’t like the idea.
The CommuterRail here in the Boston area does VERY well.
.
This is an incredibly stupid idea and likely MORE polluting than currently when you account for the inputs of mining/manufacturing/transportating the raw materials through fabrication and installation of the components making up the green infrastructure.
Traveling is an economic decision. To get me out of my car, the cost of driving has to be punitive in someway. Our city has good bus service and I use it on occasion. Most of the time it is inconvenient to use. If I want to go to the main retail area, it takes about a hour to get there by bus. I can drive there in about 5 minutes. A 30 minute shopping trip by car is 2:30 by bus. I'd still take the car if gas was $8 a gallon. If I lived in a big city and parking costs $30 for a workday, I certainly would look into alternative modes of transportation.
Travelling is a economic and environmental decision. Many if not most of these do-gooders who want to “save the environment” would do more for it by using public transportation whenever they could instead of advocating for and supporting public financing of windmills and solar panels. (bot of which it’s being learned have long-term impacts which are just plain awful).
We know many of the do-gooders are do as I say, not as I do. I live a region that isn’t the best for solar, but I do see solar panel installations. The break even point is somewhere around 12 to 15 years. So some people are putting there money where there mouth is.
Of course it does.
For example, the T spends $5.75 to subsidize every ride on the commuter rail, compared to just $0.61 per subway ride which accounts for the bulk of the T's ridership. On the RIDE, the agencys paratransit service, which is mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act, the subsidy skyrockets to $45.53 per trip.
The Ride is a joke. The few deserving people who use it are vastly outnumbered by the freeloaders. Now I see the commuter train riders are freeloaders too...
I prefer reality to fantasy. Big Power certainly gets their share of subsidies especially at the state level since states compete for their economic benefits. But Big Power didn't kill fusion, fusion got and gets plenty of money to do the basic R&D to make it viable. So far it has not shown to be viable on a commercial scale, only in small experiments. So while your friend showed it worked, it has not worked enough to produce even a few kW.
All our Indiana weather comes from the west.
If those trees are successful in sucking up the moisture for growth; then WE get to be the desert!
Nearly all the mosture in Indiana comes from the gulf. The weather systems that come from the west will still come from the west and tap that moisture.
And Great Lakes
My neighbors, both in their 90s,and him a D-Day vet,use The Ride a couple of times a week, for social things.Family takes care of medical visits.

This was an awesome response.
You win the internet
Thanks ckilmer, interesting take on it!
Indiana weather comes from the west northwest.
West Texas weather comes from the southeast and occasionally from the south west.
different weather systems.
Oh. Thanks
Unless they are crippled, the family needs to sign them up for Uber and pay for that.
“Unless they are crippled, the family needs to sign them up for Uber and pay for that.”
Good idea, but just curious———wouldn’t the elderly couple need a smartphone to call Uber? I think they only have an old fliphone.
