Venezuela will fly 15 tonnes of gold to the United Arab Emirates in coming days in return for euros in cash as the country tries to stay solvent, sources have said.
In total, Nicolas Maduro plans to sell 29 tonnes of Venezuelan gold - worth around $1.2billion - to the UAE by February in order to buy basic goods and prop up his crumbling government.
Meanwhile Russia, which is backing Maduro, was forced to deny being in contact with opponent Juan Guaido after the politician said he sent a message to Moscow.

Yeah, the downside of socialism...
“General Pinochet...white courtesy phone...”
Shameful, but.....in fact our Occupation Gummint is DOING THE SAME.
He has to pay off (every month) the military generals, the court-judges, favorites of his entourage, and the police chiefs. I would take a guess that it’s in the range $200-to-$300 million a year.
Maduro takes the money and flees....fleas
Ain’t gunna be nothin’ left but the cryin’.
Good move on Maduro’s part. Now he’s got himself some hard cash. If he can get basic necessities to the Venezuelan people fast enough, he might be able to buy himself another year or two in power.
This assumes, of course, that most of the money won’t be diverted to Swiss bank accounts.
Swiss bank ?
‘twas my first thought.
I’d love to get inside of the mindset here. “Hey we’re gunna pull this thing out, just wait, it’ll be great!”. He should have just taken the money and run. This is what you get when room temp IQ’s get to run a country.
"Hoo-hoo-hoo, go on, take the money and run"
Our friends, the Emiratis?
Well....where does he go? The only country in the Americas that might take the guy is Cuba. I don’t even think that anybody from Africa or the Middle East would take him.
The USA’s great advantage is that the world is forced to take our central bank printed dollars. At least for now.
Imagine if Maduro had that advantage?
What are the odds that Maduro will be on the plane with the gold when it leaves Venezuela?
He’s definitely stealing it.
The middle east will take him. He can live next to Jacob Zuma in Dubai.
More likely Maduro is trying to raise some runnin money.
like obama and pelosi, maduro will get a cut
of the money transferred. secretly.
as the country starves.
as venezuela eats shoes and each other,
the socialist will gain another billion dollars
by behind the scene schemes
