A biblical scholar has suggested that due to an unfortunate mistranslation in the Bible, God did not create Eve from Adams rib but rather from his penis. Needless to say, several historical purists are up in arms.
Professor Ziony Zevit from the American Jewish University in Maryland has proposed his theory in a new book, What Really Happened in the Garden of Eden. According to Zevit, the Hebrew word tsela in the Old Testament does not translate as rib. Rather, Zevit believes that tsela means a limb sticking out sideways from an upright human body, and contextually translates this to penis. Furthering this hypothesis, Zevit uses his new translation to explain why man is the only mammal without a penis bone because Adam used his to make Eve.

Could this “scholar” have a fixation of a kind? Really? And if so, uh, who cares?
Oy,Vey!
Humans are the only primate species without a baculum, not the only mammal.
"....well that opens all sorts of possibilities of discovering where Pelosi originated"
I knew I was cheated down there, I just didn’t know how.
This can’t be. Adam had more than one rib and could afford to give up one. Not to mention, they begat a lot.
the word means “side”,
as in side of a building
or side of man.
So ... every time I kiss my wife I’m giving myself head ?
Never really considered it, but it does make a lot of sense.
Key questions:
- which Bible was he using as his source for this innovative “translation”?
- the most commonly used Bible by Jews today is the Masoretic, written in the 10-11th centuries, but contains many mistranslations, errors, and innovations.
- the oldest extant translation of the Bible is the Septuagint (LXX), written in GREEK between 250-150 BC.
- what do the Dead Sea Scrolls say about it (if anything)?
I’ve read that there are studies indicate that about half of Americans who identify themselves as “Jew” or “Jewish” also say that they’re atheists.I wonder if this “Biblical scholar” might be one.
The female human rib cage has one less rib than the male human rib cage and the story of God using Adam’s rib to create woman (Adam did nothing but fall asleep) was meant to explain how this could be true although the math doesn’t add up. If the man gave up the rib then men should have one LESS rib than women, not one more.
Nonetheless, if Adam’s penis was used to create Eve, then one would expect to see the bone in Eve’s clitoris, where none exists.
I’d give this theory a giant FAIL.
Exactly.
We can be certain the ancients had a word for penis and they did not use it here for a reason.
So "rib" might be too precise a translation, but no reason to think they intended to mean something very different.
Right. Exactly.
What you said.
The vast majority of both men and women have twelve pairs of ribs.
Even if one interprets Genesis literally, and the original Adam had one ribbed removed, that would not have altered his genetic makeup. The children of Adam and Eve, and all their descendants, would have twelve pairs of ribs.
san fran figures, he’s probably gay or in the closet
If all other male creatures had a bone in their penis, I might buy that. But they don’t. No. All males have a UNIVERSAL RETRACTIBLE PENIS. I use that as one of my arguements AGAINST evolution. Another is retractible wings on creatures that fly. Some insects, like Ladybugs even have little doors that open and close, housing their wings. But ALL wings in Creation fold up automatically when not flying. That is DESIGN!
BTTT for LXX!
