Video at link.
The Washington Post sponsored an ad during the Super Bowl that may have been the most pretentious, the most exaggerated paean to the religion of journalism ever created. They call it "Democracy dies in darkness" and it features a grand, sweeping musical score and actor Tom Hanks seriously intoning the importance, the necessity, and the need to worship journalism.
When we go off to war.
When we exercise our rights.
When we soar to our greatest heights.
When we mourn and pray.
When our neighbors are at risk.
When our nation is threatened.
Theres someone to gather the facts.
To bring you the story.
No matter the cost.
Because knowing empowers us.
Knowing helps us decide.
Knowing keeps us free.
They are absolutely right about that. But what exactly is it that we are "knowing"? The mantra presupposes that the "facts" that we are "knowing" are delivered to readers and viewers without bias, or malice; that the media eschews the temptation to shape and manipulate public opinion to achieve a desired political end.
But it doesn't. And it hides its blatant bias behind pious mouthings about press freedom, making it seem as if journalism is somehow sacred and above reproach or criticism. Being a journalist is a calling, they claim; sort of like priests but without the celibacy requirement.
The Washington Post spent millions on this ad, and the reviews were decidedly mixed.

Greenfield pegs the Newseum for exactly what it is:
The Newseum white elephant at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue isnt just narcissistic idolatry, it celebrates an idea of journalism that doesnt exist. Journalism now is a bunch of millennial social justice activists playing dress-up. Theyre not a profession or an industry. They dont report. They dont know anything. And they dont serve the public...

I laughed when I saw that Muslim Brother Kashoggi guy was given as one of their media hero-”victims.”
The Ministry Of Propaganda isn’t feeling the love?
The wapo has killed democracy.
AND, the very next day we learn WaPo spiked the VA Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax sexual assault story.

The “Amazon” Washington Post.
That ad is just begging for a parody. Hope someone with talent takes a crack at it.
Knowlege workers are trained to understand the differences between:
- data (raw facts)
- information (data in context)
- wisdom (information with insight)
The old rule of “garbage in - garbage out still applies. Where most news outlets get it wrong is that the context used to evaluate the facts is based on their subjective liberal ideology.
- Polar vortex happening - must be global warming or climate change.
- a couple dozen people die in mass shooting - it’s because of not enough gun control
etc
Yep, WaPo’s idolization of Kashoggi is pathetic.
In all honesty, I didn’t even know there was a game on until I took my wife and kids out to lunch after church. The diner we ate at had the stupidity on the screen. We were able to ignore it though because we had more important things to discuss.

...
The story was cast into the darkness.
Two things teed me off. One: when our nation is “threatened”, it showed a picture of the Oklahoma City bombing. Should have been 9-11. Second, Khashoggi wasn’t a journo. He was an op-ed writer who liked to poke the Saudi royal family in the eye. No reason to kill him, but he ain’t exactly Danny Pearl. Other than that, just another tech billionaire trying to buy respectability, and using an over the hill leftwing white guy to do the voiceover.
FWIW, doesn’t look like Tom Hanks was Bezos’ first choice: https://pagesix.com/2019/02/04/jeff-bezos-yanked-20-million-super-bowl-ad-for-blue-origin/
When we’re a democracy, I’ll worry.
Support Free Republic, Folks!
Isnt Jeff Bezos threatening to sue the National Enquirer for publishing his texts/story about his cheating/affair? Hmmm....
The fake news mantra is leaving a mark. The WaPos plea for credibility is a symptom of the damage resentment of the media is inflicting. Deservedly so.
Newseum is closing. Somehow people did not want to pay $25 to enter the Shrine to USA Today.
Very well said and this is exactly why the corrupt MSM are so insidious and evil. They proclaim their lies and deliberate bias are truth and that all should bow down and revere them.
I agree...For too long the media has gotten a free pass and now things are starting to change for the better.
