Meredith Koop, the stylist behind Michelle Obamas flawless wardrobe, has a bone to pick with the fashion industry.
Im a white woman. I interact with people in fashion of all different races and backgrounds, but I will say that I find the fashion industry to be not diverse, Koop explained during NYFW The Talks: Passion Meets Purpose Presented by TRESemmé, a panel discussion during New York Fashion Week over the weekend.
I find it to be frustrating, and I dont really want to be a part of it.

By the time a woman is at MO’s age, she ought to know what is flattering to her. She shouldn’t need to have a ‘stylist’ to tell her.
Personal style works out over your younger years and settles by the time you are at least 30...unless you CRAVE looking like a HS girl all your life

What sells, sells...what doesn’t sell, doesn’t...it’s not that difficult to see that if you “design” crap, folks don’t want to spend their money on it.

Interesting that on Zimbio they used to have over 50,000 pages of Melania images. They now have 4,000. What happened to them? Everyone else has all of the images under their names.

The fashion industry (behind the scenes) is a lot of hard, non-glamorous work. There is a reason that in the USA it is now dominated by Israeli Jews and Koreans (and to a lesser extent, white males) - the money is there, but it requires a work ethic to extract it.
People who like to fantasize about being designers and ordering around a cast of hundreds and who think they deserve such roles based on racial quotas for red carpet appearances dont last very long. It is very difficult for any young designer to break in - one who expects a preference may get a couple of glowing magazine articles written by the usual suspects but will then quickly disappear.

Hard to find feminine attire that can hide a jock strap

The problem is not the stylist, but the wearer. Michelle Obama chooses the clothes she wears. I doubt the stylist hits her over the head to convince her to wear those clothes.
No, the article is blaming the public and other stylists. However, I think that whomever the stylist is, Michelle’s clothes will ultimately end up with the same look, as that is obviously the ‘look’ that Michelle prefers.

I assume she means diversity of opinions, right? Because she has a great point if that's what she means.
Oh. no, she doesn't care about that. Never mind.

Guess Meredith really gets off on trying (I wrote trying) to make a man look like a woman. Pay must be terrific.

MO and her “fashion designers” have all the “fashion sense” of a bag lady and a wholesale curtain salesman.
