Man goes viral with plan to retire to a Holiday Inn instead of nursing home to save costs

A Texas man is planning to spend his retirement years at Holiday Inns nationwide instead of moving into a nursing home in an effort to cut costs, ABC affiliate WSET reported.

Terry Robinson of Spring, Texas, listed his reasons for spending his golden years as a customer of the hotel chain in a viral post on Facebook earlier this month.

While the average cost of a nursing home can amount to $188.00 per day, Robinson wrote in the post that reservations at the Holiday Inn cost $59.23 per night with a “combined long term stay discount and senior discount."

“Breakfast is included and some have happy hours in the afternoon,” Robinson wrote. “That leaves $128.77 a day for lunch and dinner in any restaurant we want, or room service, laundry, gratuities and special TV movies. Plus, they provide a spa, swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge and washer-dryer, etc.”

“Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap,” he went on to write, adding that “$5 worth of tips a day and you'll have the entire staff scrambling to help you.”

"They treat you like a customer, not a patient,” he said.

Robinson added that the staff will also "call an ambulance ... or the undertaker" if anything bad happens.

Robinson also said that he would be able to travel wherever he wants with the plan as the Holiday Inn has more than 1,100 locations accords the world, according to USA Today.

As for family visits, Robinson wrote that “they will always be glad to find you, and probably check in for a few days mini-vacation.”

"The grand-kids can use the pool,” he added.

Robinson’s post has gone on to rack up more than 108,000 shares as of Tuesday.

His post comes months after the annual expenses of a private room in a nursing home was found to have hit the six-figure threshold as of October 2018, according to CNBC. Nursing home care is typically meant for people who are not self-sufficient and involves assistance by trained medical staff.

The report found in a new study that the national annual median cost of a private room in a nursing home amounted to roughly $100,375.

The most expensive place for care in a nursing home in the United States was Alaska, according to the study, where the annual median cost of a room in a nursing home was reportedly $330,873.

Washington, D.C., reportedly has the highest cost for a one bedroom at an assisted living facility, with the annual median cost estimated to be about $111,195.

All is fine until you have an emergency medical condition.

I'm sure the front counter will call an ambulance. Not much different. I think his plan is brilliant and may start a new franchise. Gotta look for the silver lining!

Yawn. Terry Robinson recycled almost 15-year-old spam.

I’ve heard a variation on this, except it involved cruise ships.

Some of the same word phrases, and same cost of $188.00 more than 14 years apart:

“With the average cost for a nursing home per day reaching $188.00...”

FAIL.

I always figured a cargo cruise at $100 a day would be a good alternative, but you have to stay in good health for stair climbing. They also don’t generally have a doctor. - https://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/what-the-hell-is-a-cargo-cruise-magnificent-that-s-what

Years ago a friend checked with a Cruise Ship line along this same concept.

It was considerably cheaper than any retirement home or nursing home with meals all day.

There are people who retire and live on cruise ship, for a cost of approximately $100,000 per year.

I remember a man on a business trip explained to his wife that he needed to share a hotel room with his secretary to ‘cut down on costs.’ She asked Dear Abby for a 2nd opinion.

This is an apples and oranges type comparison.

Comparing a the cost of a nursing home to staying in a hotel is not proper. If someone needs 24 hour nursing care in a nursing home, you won’t get that care in a hotel.

A better comparison would be how much to stay in various retirement communities, where the residents are in good health and not needing constant medical care, vs. a hotel, if he wants to make a comparison that way.

The plagiarist changed TWO digits in these numbers, $49.53 to $59.23, and $138.77 to $128.77.

Original

“I have already checked on reservations at the Hilton. For a combined long-term stay discount and senior discount, it is $49.23 per night. That leaves $138.77 a day for...”

Article about the plagiarist:

“Robinson wrote in the post that reservations at the Holiday Inn cost $59.23 per night”

“That leaves $128.77 a day for lunch and dinner in any restaurant”

FAIL FAIL FAIL

There’s people doing the same thing on cruise ships.

Myself, I’m thinking a cabin in the woods somewhere, and if the good Lord takes me, or maybe the local wildlife, so be it.

Or maybe just skip that and relax in my comfy chair in suburbia as long as I can afford the power bill and stuff.

Whatevah. Not there yet.

Boston at last and the plane’s touching down
Our hostess is handing the hot towels around
From a terminal gate to a black limousine
It’s a ten minute ride to the Holiday Inn
Boredom’s a pastime that one soon acquired
Where you get to the stage where you’re not even tired
Kicking your heels till the time comes around
To pick up your bags and head out of town

chorus:
Slow down Joe, I’m a rock and roll man
I’ve twiddled my thumbs in a dozen odd bands
And you ain’t seen nothing till you’ve been
In a motel baby like the Holiday Inn

(repeat chorus)

Oh I don’t even know if it’s Cleveland or Maine
With the buildings as big and rooms just the same
And the TV don’t work and the french fries are cold
And the room service closed about an hour ago

Some rich folk spend their later years
with permanent residence on cruise liners.
I could do that ... well, except for the money part.

Most people don’t need a nursing home until they have trouble dressing, bathing, cooking, shopping, etc. Many have trouble with seeing. Some have mental issues like dementia or extreme short term memory loss.

If you can live in a hotel, you don’t need a nursing home. It is when you NEED the assistance a nursing home is supposed to provide, that you can’t get around a hotel yourself.

Plan is a complete fail. He is wasting his money on a hotel when he can just live at home as long as he is mobile and can take care of himself.
