At least 8 tons of gold were removed from the Venezuelan central bank's vaults last week, an opposition legislator and three government sources told Reuters, in the latest sign of President Nicolas Maduro's desperation to raise hard currency amid tightening sanctions.

The gold was removed in government vehicles between Wednesday and Friday last week when there were no regular security guards present at the bank, Legislator Angel Alvarado and the three government sources said.

"They plan to sell it abroad illegally," Alvarado said in an interview.

The central bank did not respond to requests for comment.

Alvarado and the government sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not say where the central bank was sending the gold. They said the operation took place while central bank head Calixto Ortega was abroad on a trip.

In 2018, 23 tons of mined gold were transported from Venezuela to Istanbul by plane, according to sources and Turkish government data.

Maduro's government has resorted to selling off gold after falling oil production, the country's wider economic collapse and mounting sanctions hit public income and made it hard for the country to access credit.

It’s going into Maduro’s bank account. He knows his days are numbered.

A Russian aircraft took away something like 22 tons of Venezuelan gold just a few weeks ago.

8 tons?
They’re rookies.
I wonder how many tons the Catholic church has stolen from the Americas over the centuries?

You know, $320 million just doesn’t go as far as it used to...

With the 23 tons of gold shipped out last year, this pegs his rough overall cash-out at around $1.24 billion.

Apparently Maduro’s attempt to ship 20 tons of Venezuelan gold out of the country, which became public on February 2 of this year, was called off due to international pressure, which consisted largely of US sanctions.

A week before the attempted 20-ton move (worth about $850 million), the Bank of England had denied a request from Maduro to withdraw $1.2B worth of bullion.

Unless we invade with the airborne Rangers and kill Maduro and those that enable him, he will be leader of Venezuela a long long time, just like Castro. He who has the guns, rules. all this cia sponsored food for peace crap never works against communists. Silly.

Probably Maduro is shipping it to China in anticipation of his fleeing there and joining up with it. China will shield him from the West

That’s what was done by the Spanish Commies (aka, “Republicans” in an attempt to make them sound legitimate and respectable). They shipped out all of the Spanish gold reserves directly from Valencia to the USSR. Later the leftists said that it was for weapons purchases, and indeed the Russians sent them some weapons..from the Crimean War.

The USSR directly controlled the “Republican”” forces in Spain. The commanders in Barcelona and Valencia were RussIan.

In any case, they always want to get the gold.
