I have dual citizenship (US and Italy). My parents are both (legal) Italian immigrants. The only real benefit I have is that I can travel freely in Europe and can live/travel in Italy with no time restrictions if I wanted (still have a lot of relatives there). A few years ago I traveled on short notice to Brazil using my Italian passport...I would’ve had to jump thru hoops to get a visa using the US passport. So, there are benefits like that. I love Italy, there are worse places to have dual citizenship with, of course.

I once read about this benefit: Dual citizenship might work for someone who wants to travel freely through the EU countries.

For example, Americans with dual citizenship in Italy can use their Italian passports to travel freely through the other EU countries.

I posted before I saw your post above. So then, what I read about traveling with dual citizenship is true.

What about income taxes, though?

Not so — they have to swear alegiance to the Queen of Canada. The real problem is the “also” — chose one or the other.

The US and Italy (like many countries) have a Tax Treaty which prevents double taxation. If you are a resident of the US, you do not pay Italian income taxes. If you reside abroad in another country the rules are different but I've never lived elsewhere so am not sure how that would affect things.

It has since changed, but when I lived in Canada, I was expected to pay any money my taxes to Canada would net out against filing in the US. Or something like that.

“It was the USSC that changed that in the ‘60s.”

I wonder why that was? Any ideas?

i disagree. by age 18 they should have to declare. that’s 3 more years of mental instability not declaring which country they want to truly be loyal to. 18 is when you leaglly vote - I don’t what mentally undecleared dual citizens voting - or at least least amount possible since we have some much vote cheating going one already.

Look at some clear history our pre and founding era had grade schoolers or teens who understood so much more about loyalty to country and knowing who the enemies of USA freedom ideals were and how to keep them in check. They also were well learned and studied on foreign countries too. wall builders.com David Barton has great info and documents of founding era writings - it’s amazing the people we had and thought and prayer that went into creating our USA.

My thought is that most 18 year old’s are immature this is a mature decision. I want the person to take the time to think about what they are doing. I would say you are right about them not being able to vote. until they declare there should be no participations in elections, serving in the military or sitting on juries. I would say there rights with in the law should be the same as a foreign visitor. they just have the ability to fill out the paper work during the that time for full citizenship and renouncing the foreign citizenship.

Japan recognizes dual for kids until maturity. In Japan it’s 20, but the maturity age is different for a lot of things there. 18 for some, 20/21 for others.

My daughters are right at that age now, but they’ve already decided to keep their US.

Only reason my wife hasn’t gotten her citizenship is she’s afraid of what she would do if I passed away and wanted to be able to go home if she needed. Now that we’re getting older she’s planning to wait till 55 when the requirements to apply are less.
