Trump signs executive order to promote free speech on college campuses

President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order to promote free speech on college campuses by threatening colleges with the loss of federal research funding if they do not protect those rights.

"We’re here to take historic action to defend American students and American values," Trump said, surrounded by conservative student activists at the signing ceremony. "They’ve been under siege."

"Under the guise of speech codes, safe spaces and trigger warnings, these universities have tried to restrict free thought, impose total conformity and shut down the voices of great young Americans like those here today," he said.

A senior administration official said the order directs 12 grant-making agencies to use their authority in coordination with the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to ensure institutions that receive federal research or education grants promote free speech and free inquiry. White House officials say it will apply to more than $35 billion in grants.

Public universities seeking funding would have to certify that they comply with the First Amendment, which already applies to them. Private universities, which have more flexibility in limiting speech, would need to commit to their own institutional rules.

"Even as universities have received billions and billions of dollars from taxpayers, many have become increasingly hostile to free speech and the First Amendment," Trump said.

Trump had announced that such an order was forthcoming at the Conservative Political Action Conference last month, where he said the directive would require colleges and universities to support free speech in exchange for federal research dollars.

My sentiments re: vote fraud...the days toward election are passing, little seems to be happening; it’s vital we keep this in front of the public...I brought it up w my congressman what else can we do?

Thank you President Trump.

The President is doing all the kind of things my father has spoken about as being needed over the dining table over the last 20years.
Just pure common sense, down to earth, patriotic logic.

Trump is one man but within him he personifies the spirit of a nation

Okay, Disney and Comcast fought over Fox and it was more than Fox News. A quality quibble.

Backslidings and revivals tend to happen in cycles.

It’s the heavy “redneck” contingent of America that keeps things God on its mind in proportions greater than that of virtually atheistic Europe.

I smelled this in the spiritual wind years ago. Gospel fields commonly appear some time after things worldly begin to turn up rotten due to loss of the salt and light.

What’s Betsy Devos doing? Is she implementing anything in our schools? How about classes on constitution and having prayer..,,?

Love it, now take away the federal funding until the American people can see the curriculum they will be teaching

Spot on, dp.

The president’s greatest challenger in 2020 will be voter fraud. They saw how successful it was in 2018. I don’t believe for one minute they took the house legitimately. No way.

You got anything against this part?

Snip

DeVos firmly believes that neither the ZIP code in which a child lives nor a child's household income should be the principal determinant of his or her opportunity to receive a world-class education. As secretary, she will advocate for returning control of education to states and localities, giving parents greater power to choose the educational settings that are best for their children and ensuring that higher education puts students on the path to successful careers.

If you do it shows your ignorance. Shame on you.

It's definitely caveat emptor. They'll take your money either way, it's just up to the student to make the right choices or else get scammed. And a lot of modern college courses look like utter scams - time and money spent for NO benefit. Either people aren't thinking it through or else they are of the sort that don't care and are out for prestige - just get Junior out of the house and get him/her a diploma from the University of XYZ that says they're smart (in something) so they don't look like losers to their social circle. As for any possible post college employment, depending on if "Junior" is even interested in such a thing, there's probably a plan to network him/her in somewhere whether they're capable and competent at it or not.

This might be it:

— Give Prospective Students More Meaningful and Useful Information about Schools and Programs

Providing prospective students with more transparent information about the institutions and programs they are considering will enable them to make better decisions about their education. Although the Department of Education currently provides students with useful institution-level data—such as annual costs, average earnings, and graduation rates—Congress should ensure students have the program-level earnings and outcome data they need to make better informed choices about potential careers and educational opportunities.

I am not optimistic any school will lose any
money over this nor am I optimistic there
will be any changes to speech on campus.

It will go the way of denying funding to
sanctuary cities — tied up in courts while
funds flow until the next president, Democrat
or Republican, gets into office and under heat.

It’s wind-mill tilting, but I applaud the
President for making the effort.

It’s something, but not far enough. Who needs universities. The only one worth crap ever was Tuskegee, because they insisted on teaching students practical trades along with book learning. That would be great if it were done in Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc.
