Australia's coal bonanza at risk as Chinese import 'ban' spreads
The Guardian UK ^ | 21 Mar 2019 | Martin Farrer and Ben Smee

….It remains unclear why Australian imports have been targeted for the hold-ups at customs..

... Tension between Canberra and Beijing has been growing in recent years amid concern about China’s military ambitions in the South China Sea but has intensified over the reach of technology companies such as Huawei and ZTE, the “state actor” cyber-attack on Parliament House and the rejection of Huang Xiangmo’s visa.

However, there are also intriguing market-centred reasons why China might want to reduce its reliance on foreign resources and which suggest that Australia’s coal industry could be facing a more existential threat.

Alex Turnbull, of the Singapore-based hedge fund Keshik Capital, said the port slowdown was the result of wide-ranging changes in the Chinese economy. A huge expansion of rail infrastructure in the past decade had enabled China to begin exploiting its vast inland coalfields in areas such as inner Mongolia and Shanxi...

China trying to drive the price down?

but here's the kicker: Indonesian, Russian, Chinese and Australian coal good. American coal bad. What's wrong with this picture? And which politicians and NGOs profited from killing American coal?

Apparently Australian coal is now “bad” also. Australia, China is NOT your friend.

An old but apt caricature. They made their billions kissin' the cheeks of the Chicoms.

But the Chinese are like that: they play along until they own your butt.

The Guardian is a great source for propaganda.

Hey, If China wants Australian coal, then they will pay the high prices that Australia wants. But, heck, it’s cheaper to mine the coal locally. Wait for it...

...It’s called Capitalism.

The Guardian tries to act like they’re being good little environmental soldiers when the reality of China’s coal consumption cannot be denied. China will burn the last lump of coal this planet has to offer if that’s possible. And nobody is gonna stop that. Especially these tree hugging watermelons.

I’ve been enjoying Australian TV Dramas on Netflix because of their perspective on America, China, and there own government. Interesting to learn about their laws and how much they don’t trust government and outside influence.

When waves of Chinese troops appear on Australian shores, the Aussies can repel them with sticks and lumps of coal.

It was sad to see Australia become just another Chinese mining colony...like Africa.

No,I think the Aussies would put up a good fight. It's New Zealand that would bow down and kiss the feet of their conquerors.

I know the Aussies are a tough lot, but weren’t they disarmed after some mass killings previously?

They never had that many guns to start with. Most of what they have are .22 rifles and shotguns. They have very few pistols.

A fair number of centerfire rifles, lots of those with excellent optics. But we are talking about enough to field maybe 1 million militia with substandard arms. They may have a couple hundred rounds of ammo per rifle...

There are only 25 million Australians altogether.

China could, if it wished, field an army of 25 million.

Right now, they do not have the means to project an army like that across the ocean...

It seems more likely China will dominate commercially, then demand, slowly and subtly that Australia allow more and more Chinese immigration.

In my opinion, Chinese land buyers are what is driving land prices in Australia to record levels.

Houses in Australia cost 2-4 times what a similar house would cost in the USA.
