A good article, of the founders and later leaders including Presidents supported the concept of a Jewish state. Long before it was a possibility. Of course in a good article funny things stand out. I could find it in my heart to wish that you had been at the head of a hundred thousand Israelites indeed as well disciplined as a French army –marching with them into Judea & making a conquest of that country & restoring your nation to the dominion of it. For I really wish the Jews again in Judea an independent nation. Four years after Waterloo I understand the sentiment. It took what, the sixth or seventh alliance, European alliance but essentially world wars from a western perspective, to put Napolean down. No disrespect to the French soldier, but essentially France's time as an effective world power was already over. Brave soldiers, ineffective, sometimes stupid, leadership. Probably a better model. But in 1819 would anyone prefer being at the head of 100,000 Americans, much less Jews, rather than French.
