A car should run quite a ways without the alternator as long as you don’t use the lights, radio, horn, etc.

“recalled Felo, a salesman at an REI retail store.“

Even his job is a virtue signal.

A dead short would do that, which makes your immediate stop understandable. Rare, but not totally unheard of. I hate when oddball failures occur, they are...challenging, to put it mildly.

“I will never consider again, Toyota and Hyundai.”

Mrs L and I are on our 4th and 5th Hyundai vehicles. They’ve given us excellent service. Why were you unsatisfied? Just curious.

Thanks,

L

I have an REI number that is so low that cashiers often think it is fake

Your post is not only ignorant but insulting. I can only assume that you are a chip munching couch potato too lazy to be up and about

“Your post is not only ignorant but insulting.”

Ignorant? Nope.

Insulting? Good. That’s exactly what I was going for.

“I can only assume that you are a chip munching couch potato too lazy to be up and about.”

You assume incorrectly. When I am in the market for outdoor gear I patronize my local Cabelas. REI is nothing more than an upscale Dicks. Why would I go to one store for outdoor gear and another for firearms and reloading supplies when I can get all of it at one store that actually welcomes gun owners and doesn’t have a stupid “No Guns” sign on the front door?

Foolishness........ Were it not for REI, the others would not exist.

Your snobbery is misguided

Ford Pinto has nothing on the Prius. At least the Pinto needed a collision to ignite.

Actually the pinto was a pretty good car.

“I was lucky nobody was behind me because I would have been rear-ended,” recalled Felo, a salesman at an REI retail store. The car was towed to the dealer, which gave Felo the bad news: It would cost $3,000 to replace the shoe-box sized unit.

...

Further down in the article it says a 2010 would be covered by an extended warranty from Toyota.

Used and working condition inverters are available on eBay for $130. A refurb with two year warranty is $800.

Nothing like limping along as you try to move across several lanes on an interstate where everyone else is going 70.

That's what blinkers are for! Of course, their functioning might be iffy if you've got a massive electrical system failure on your hands.

The Toyota Prius come from the factory with Obama, Hillary & Bernie bumper stickers on them.

Remove the bumper stickers and much of the internal friction will immediately disappear, thus causing the car to stop overheating.

A friend of mine move to the New mexico desert country. Twice she had to have her Prius rewired as the desert mice love to eat the soy based insulation covering the electrical wires.

FWIW, my 2007 Camry hybrid died last year with no warning. car still ran fine as I was driving back and forth from FL to Pittsburgh, 1,000 miles each way. You would think if the Prius had a limp mode built in to make people buy a $3,000 replacement unit, they would do the same on the Camry. The problem is the cruise control was disabled during those long trips back and forth. Never realized how much I used CC until I couldn’t move my foot for a few minutes every so often. $1,600 for a new battery and all is good at 250,000 miles.

My thought too. How is that not a recall? A software upgrade causing a unit to fry? I’d be demanding a free replacement, how on earth can the customer be expected to pay for it?

You might also have a law suit.

Only with an already weak battery. I once managed to limp home when this happened, at night in the winter, by turning off anything that sucked power. When the car started stuttering I turned off the heater (motor) - car picked up again. I turned off the radio and even the main headlights for half a mile...I literally rolled into my parking spot.

Back before there were alternators, you could rev the engine at night and the headlights would get brighter. And before there were electric windshield wipers, the wipers operated off of manifold vacuum which meant that as you revved the engine, vacuum would drop, and your wipers would slow down.

Driving was sometimes like conducting a little symphony.

Maybe that explains all the Prius drivers driving slow in the passing lane. /LOL

Any car will continue to run just fine after the alternator fails until the battery dies. That would take at least an hour.

I walked by the local REI a while back. There was the legally required “No guns” sign in the window. To me that means two things.

1.) it’s run by virtue signaling jerks.
2.) They don’t want my money.
