Senate Republicans tested on Trump support after Mueller
The Hill ^ | 04/21/19 06:03 AM EDT | ALEXANDER BOLTON

Special counsel Robert Mueller's report poses a test for vulnerable Senate Republicans running for reelection, forcing them to decide how far to distance themselves from President Trump heading into 2020.

Mueller declined to pursue charges of conspiracy, illegal coordination or obstruction of justice, but much of his report reflects poorly on the president and reveals there are several more federal investigations that have yet to wrap up.

While House Democrats will need to decide how hard to go to attack Trump in the wake of the report and whether to pursue a politically charged impeachment process, Senate Republicans have to figure out how far to go to defend the president.

“I think Republicans should avoid doing a victory lap. The main thing here was, were the Russians involved in the Trump campaign? Beyond that, the president’s got to defend his own conduct,” said Vin Weber, a GOP strategist. “Republicans should be talking about other things like the economy.”

ADVERTISEMENT Asked what Republicans should do if they're asked directly about Trump’s conduct, Weber said, “That’s a tough one.”

“I would probably deflect a little bit by saying this: We’ve all gotten used to this being a different kind of president from a different kind of background who conducts himself differently than previous presidents, and beyond that it’s his problem, not mine,” he added.

Some expect Republicans to wait to see how the highly anticipated report plays with their constituents back home over the two-week holiday recess.

“Are Republicans privately unhappy with some of Trump’s actions in the report? Yes, of course. But the majority of Republicans are not going to go after the president on this because he has not been charged with a crime,” said another Republican strategist who requested anonymity.

Look for RINO Senate Republicans led by Romney to try
to deliver a Biden presidency.

We need to investigate, well actually bring charges against the coup plotters and treasonous players and then see the media howl and be outraged by the truth of the evil among our government. Only then will Trump have re-election sealed up.

Problem: the RINOs like Mitt never had character and a belief in America if it ever conflicted with their personal careers and wealthbuilding to start with, so expecting them to suddenly be ready for a starring role in a chapter of a new edition of Profiles in Courage is unrealistic.

As Harry Truman said of the politicians: If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.

Everyone in DC listens all day long to the radio station WII FM (call letters stand for What’s In It For Me).

Now we really have a trigger to get nauseous. Sheesh.

But first Mitt will tell Biden: Just one thing, Joe. I have to insist you lay off smelling my hair and caressing my shoulders. Okay?

Sounds like the old McCain “Advisors” are working behind the veil to flip the Senate to RAT.
For sure they are involved in helping McSally to loose.

and there’s enough weak kneed Rs in the senate to put it through
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are correct, they have more than enough Bush League Republicans to remove him if it gets that far.
They want Trump gone as much as the Democrats do.
We weren’t supposed to be able to elect a President who sided with US and the rule law.
It is always amusing to see you post things like that as though you have credibility - if you had your way, full blown amnesty would have already been passed and the Supreme Court would be solidly under Leftist control and stripped the President of immigration control powers - the 5-4 rulings that have gone his way would have gone in the other way if what you have advocated for over the years came to fruition with supporting far-left Dem candidates laughably arguing they would be better than their Republican opponents. We wouldn’t even be able to discuss this now of you had had your way - the battle would have long been lost.
“I would [say] this: ...it’s his problem, not mine...” - Vin Weber, GOP Strategist
Sounds wimpy, but Weber may be advising a tactical withdrawal and such may be warranted.
At this point the sole objective should be to hold the Senate, perhaps at any cost. If we fail to do so, there is a real risk of losing the war; see tagline.
Arguably, the Deep State and its anti-Trump sycophants have done a better job than the Socialist Dems\MSM at squelching a national rally of R support for Trump. The Deep State group may well be the ones who take our nation beyond the tipping point.
We need some new words. 'Go F#$K yourself,' doesn't even start to cover what I think.
Mueller declined to pursue charges of conspiracy, illegal coordination or obstruction of justice, but much of his report reflects poorly on the president and reveals there are several more federal investigations that have yet to wrap up.
"Reflects poorly upon the President," my @ss. Who gives a F#$K?
While House Democrats will need to decide how hard to go to attack Trump in the wake of the report and whether to pursue a politically charged impeachment process, Senate Republicans have to figure out how far to go to defend the president.
If those pansy "Senate Republicans," can't speak up about an attempted coup against our duly elected President, the F#$K them too.
“I think Republicans should avoid doing a victory lap. The main thing here was, were the Russians involved in the Trump campaign? Beyond that, the president’s got to defend his own conduct,” said Vin Weber, a GOP strategist.
Isn't that Vin Weber, loser and soon to be indicted lobbyist?
“Republicans should be talking about other things like the economy.”
You're still a loser, Vin.
Asked what Republicans should do if they're asked directly about Trump’s conduct, Weber said, “That’s a tough one.”
Only for a gutless, Vichy RINO. Those who are worried about social graces miss the big picture...there's been an attempted coup on the US Presidency. Trump's 'conduct' is irrelevant. What's relevant is that while this happens in broad daylight, Vichy RINOs are clucking about 'manners.'
“I would probably deflect a little bit by saying this: We’ve all gotten used to this being a different kind of president from a different kind of background who conducts himself differently than previous presidents, and beyond that it’s his problem, not mine,” he added.
He's OUR President, weasel...why don't you ponder that? Had we wanted some Vichy RINO candidate, there were plenty to choose from. Our choice, in hindsight, seems better all the time.
Some expect Republicans to wait to see how the highly anticipated report plays with their constituents back home over the two-week holiday recess.
Wet finger firmly in the wind, statesman all.
“Are Republicans privately unhappy with some of Trump’s actions in the report? Yes, of course. But the majority of Republicans are not going to go after the president on this because he has not been charged with a crime,” said another Republican strategist who requested anonymity.
My...how magnanimous of them.
Trump...this is why.
The only ones worthy of re-election in 2020 are Inhofe, Sullivan, Cotton, Perdue, Risch, Ernst and Cassidy.
Trump has proven to be an unconventional politician with an unconventional strategy that works. Accordingly, I am tuning out the pundits as their perspective and analysis is obsolete.
Rand Paul and Todd Young are the only two maybes from 2022.
The rest need to be replaced with people who side with the citizens and the rule of law.
Bush League Republicans want to give the Democrats a permanent majority with amnesty.
“much of his report reflects poorly on the president” That is true only for Trump haters and Democrats. It reflects poorly on Mueller, his crew and the DOJ and FBI, not on the President. People like this writer and Congressional Dems can’t see that because of their blind hate of DJT.
I agree and am part of the solid base. It would be nice if he drew fewer lines in the sand only to back away from them the next day. That kills the potency of the tactic. As for all the Tweets, I’ll bet the same will be expected of the next president. And if that president doesn’t use Twitter, he’ll be pilloried as a stick in the mud.
Yes indeed, just think of the amount of duplicitous behavior we now is routine in DC and how completely off the rails and unaccountable the federal bureaucracies have become.
It is F**King scary.
Just think about it, I'm sure Trump will at the end of the day be fine. But think about the every day citizen that have lost their wealth and freedom for the crime of wanting to participate in backing and helping to elect a candidate for president.
BTW I'm not talking about duplicitous insiders like Manafort.
