THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HAROLD ARLEN
THE WIZARD OF OZ: OVER THE RAINBOW
Sassy handles the song with utter simplicity in this Fifties video from the CBS Sunday afternoon series Omnibus. If your screen isnt blurry at the end, you have no soul!

This is early Frankie from the Axel Stordahl era in the Forties, and he shows that the song is not the exclusive property of female vocalists. My favorite version of "Over the Rainbow" is sung by Sherman Hayes with Del Courtney & His Orchestra, a "sweet" band (as opposed to a swing band) from Hawaii. This recording is very rare. When I found it on the Internet Archive today, I heard it for the first time since Ronald Reagan was president.

Doris and Judy were close friends and often traveled together by train because they both hated flying. Judy actually suggested that Doris record this.

This is one of the few recordings of "Over the Rainbow"--in fact, the only one I have ever heard--that features the verse--sometimes called "the lost verse."
Over the Rainbow--Vera Lynn (1940)
And that demands an answer!
It Always Rains Before the Rainbow--Vera Lynn (1941)

I am following you Over The Rainbow just for a bit. :) Soon I’ll be off to other envions.
This is THE classic song!
