The incredible thing is that the Conservative leadership seems oblivious...
Take the 1993 election in Canada, when the centre-Right coalition of the Progressive Conservatives shattered...The PC tried to save things by changing leader, but the damage was done: on election night they collapsed from 156 seats to just two.
There is a moral lesson to such stories: don’t let down the people who voted for you. Across many countries, the older, established parties of the centre-Right have bowed to the cultural pressure of the Left, abandoning their traditional positions on issues such as economics and crime out of fear of being labelled reactionary. But then it cooked up a Brexit-in-name only, a patent betrayal of the referendum result that may well have done so much damage to the Tories’ reputation that they cannot recover fast enough to beat Mr Corbyn.
Our poll shows that even with a new leader, the Conservatives are still in serious trouble, which is why – although a new leader is certainly needed – a philosophical renaissance is required, too. ....
