A starving polar bear has strayed hundreds of kilometres from its natural Arctic habitat and wandered, exhausted, into the major Russian industrial city of Norilsk in northern Siberia.
The female bear, visibly weak and seemingly ill, lay despondently on the ground for hours on Tuesday in Norilsks suburbs, its feet caked in mud, occasionally rising to sniff around for food.
It is the first polar bear seen in the city in more than 40 years, according to local environmentalists.
She is still moving around a factory, under observation by police and the emergency services, who are ensuring her safety and those of residents, environmental services official Alexander Korobkin told AFP.
The bear was first spotted on Sunday evening in an industrial area north-east of central Norilsk, Korobkin said.
A team of specialists are set to arrive Wednesday to inspect the animal and decide its fate.

I think if it’s legally harvested, you can still get polar bear, and even seal, for fly tying. I saw them for sale in the 90s. A friend remembers when he could buy gorilla hair.
What are they going to feed her with? Vodka?
There ain't no McDonald's up in Northern Siberia, the Russians or natives that live there are probably starving themselves.
The bear probably came down the Yenisei or Paysina Rivers which flow north into the Kara Sea. The rivers are iced in most of the year, but contain many fish.
Why not kill it?
A young bear was killed that was too friendly with people.
A friendly black bear was euthanized after it came to love people who fed it and took selfies

At least that ground won’t melt out from under her.
All animals grow old and die. For predators, this often means reduced ability to kill other animals, so they starve to death. It's not pretty, but it's life (and death).
Well that good if you want it but i haven’t been fishing in a long time. My younger brother however is the fisherman in the family. He might know more than I.
When the Brits were conquering the world, they'd send specimens of animals back home. Fly tiers seemed to find uses for things that were very exotic. Not necessary for fishing, but needed for the fly recipe. Not good for some animals, in the long run.
That’s a really nice lure. I I don’t think I ever wet(or lost) a rig that nice.
Very nice!
Prince Charles may have fished with some like that. I could never put it in the water.
Me neither... .
Very very nice!
