Sentencing looms in Charlottesville attack; man seeks mercy

The avowed white supremacist who plowed his car into counterdemonstrators opposing a white nationalist rally in Virginia two years ago, killing one person and injuring dozens, has asked a judge for mercy and a sentence shorter than life in prison.

Lawyers for James Alex Fields Jr., 22, said in a sentencing memo submitted in court documents Friday that the defendant should not spend his entire life in prison because of his age, a traumatic childhood and a history of mental illness. Fields pleaded guilty to federal hate crimes in March and is set to be sentenced on June 28.

“No amount of punishment imposed on James can repair the damage he caused to dozens of innocent people. But this Court should find that retribution has limits,” his attorneys wrote.

Prosecutors also said that while Fields has a history of mental illness issues, it doesn’t excuse his behavior in a way that would require a lenient sentence.

“Any mental health concerns raised by the defendant do not overcome the defendant’s demonstrated lack of remorse and his prior history of substantial racial animus,” prosecutors wrote.

There is a difference between legal carry and brandishing. Dwayne Dixon admitted he brandished a firearm at James Fields. This was ignored by law enforcement.

I don’t think anyone has watched the videos closely and repeatedly. He was being swarmed and did the only thing he could. If he had seriously intended to kill he would have steered into the attackers, not into the car in front of him.

And the J20 rioters? How do you explain that?

Antifa has been shielded from prosecution for engaging in felonious acts of violence in multiple jurisdictions across the country.

Reading the first ten words convinced me nothing worthwhile from this AP article....

Sorry not going to click that thing.

The Republic is doomed. It’s just a matter of time.

“She died of a cardiac arrest”
I can’t believe people still repeat that nonsense. Read the coroners report. She died from injuries related to being hit by a car, not a heart attack.

The cardiac arrest doesn’t matter because it can be considered a result of her being struck by the car. That said, the kid was guilty of vehicular manslaughter at best and got a life sentence because of his political views.

He’s guilty of being AFRAID after an enormous, violent crowd started hitting his new car.

The event was orchestrated by Gov "Punk" McAuliffe declaring an emergency immediately AFTER the park was occupied by a group with a lawful permit to rally at the statue of General Lee. The group in the park was then forced, by police, into the arms of Antifa, who were unlawfully gathered in the street. The clash was an intentional, coordinated effort by state and local government. The virtue signalers on this thread are clueless.

I’m glad somebody else bothered to look into the actual events that took place and not repeat media talking points.

“A legally permitted rally that was shut down by McAuliffe and the State Police”...who then formed a gauntlet to channel the rallyers into a corridor lined by violent communist rioters who assaulted them repeatedly. It’s a wonder nobody was killed.

So her mother lied a week later when she said that?

I watched the entire event live on Periscope, and I viewed it after having spend decades in big city law enforcement.

Actually, he was subpoenaed and refused to show for trial until the last moment when he was about to be held in contempt. Then the judge basically excluded his statement anyway.

It’s clear as day the police officers did the complete opposite on the day, possibly at the instructions of the mayor. There was a lot of strange activity around the event.

The organiser for the “unite the right” march Jason Kessler had for years been a huge supporter of Obama and was clearly a democrat who was pro-choice, for gun control and generally hated republicans. His twitter feed from that period confirms this. Then shortly after the election of Trump, we are supposed to believe he switched sides, and even became a white nationalist. This is ridiculous and totally unbelievable.

Then there was Brennan Gilmore, a CIA agent who posed as an innocent spectator and gave interviews to CNN detailing his version of events.

I think that many of the “protestors” on both sides were paid actors and the whole event has been used to paint the false narrative of Trump being a racist, white supremacist sympathiser. This was the angle that most of the mainstream media went with.

I don’t have any sympathy for the driver of the car, even if he was mentally ill and may have even been used by the deep state to do what he did.

IMO, Fields’ attorneys are remiss in failing to call for a special prosecutor to investigate the fools surrounding & beating his car.

Which, btw, is a common communist tactic. They do it hoping for precisely this outcome.

Plus, although in most cases it’s a bad idea, this seems like a rare instance in which the accused could have / should have been allowed to testify in his own behalf.

Notwithstanding his dumbass political leanings or statements in the past, I have seen no EVIDENCE of premeditation.
There is little to suggest he went there INTENDING an act of terrorism-by-car.

OTOH, there’s a LOT that suggests he was goaded & panicked, trying to get away.

“Is there a clear unedited Video of what happened?”

I remember seeing a fuzzy video when the incident first happened. Can’t find it now. Scrubbed?
FBI can clean up fuzzy vids.
See my post #37

Fields actually would have a very good chance of having the whole case reduced to a plea agreement for vehicular manslaughter if the judge didn’t get rid of Field’s original lawyer, Charles L. “Buddy” Weber, and replace him with a rabid Democrat, Denise Lunsford.

She basically suppressed most of the evidence - people beating his car, voluminous conflicting information, Dwayne chasing him with an AK-47 with CLEAR RECORDS of him boasting about it on Facebook. Furthermore, the abject stupidity of the police to first round everyone up in a park and then funnel them directly into Antifa instead of out the other side of the park. The situation would then never have happened.

I have a strong feeling that McAuliffe and the mayor plotted this whole thing, and now an innocent woman is dead.
