The president disputed Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) assertion that he would need congressional approval for any “hostilities” against Iran.
"I disagree," he said. "Most people seem to disagree."
"They have ideas. They’re intelligent people. They'll come up with some thoughts," Trump said, referring to lawmakers. "I actually learned a couple of things the other day when we had our meeting with Congress."

There are offensive strikes and defensive strikes. No authorization is needed to defend the country. In fact, failure to do so would correctly be seen as dereliction of duty

I want to agree with that. But every president will tell you that the strike they ordered was meant to defend the country.
As I see it, no authorization should be needed to defend against an ongoing, in-the-moment attack. But otherwise Congress (as goofy as they are) must be consulted.
It’s what the Founders intended.

War Powers Act specifies that when putting troops in harm’s way, even temporarily, Congress must be advised. Trump did that, and the individual Congresspeople he advised squealed to the enemy. ‘Collusion’? No more need to advise them. Done and done.
As a result of all this, gas prices jumped 10 cents around here yesterday. If they ever fire another shot in the Gulf, gas will shoot up $1.50 a gallon.
Shouldn’t President Trump have much wider latitude that usual give the sorry state of the Congress?

The power to declare/initiate war is vested in Congress. Always has been & still is.
Defending the country is no different than any other defense. It is an ongoing and active defense.
