If Mr. Kim did not attend, even though his side had seemed intrigued, it would have embarrassed Mr. Trump and opened him up to more criticism for his unpredictable diplomacy. It would also have compounded the dramatic failure of their summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, which Mr. Trump abruptly called off in February. . . .

“Tomorrow, North Korea will still have nuclear weapons, and the U.S. will still maintain sanctions,” said Leif-Eric Easley, associate professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul.

You are right about the ultimate consequences of those actions, but I would suggest to you a couple things from my perspective:

I believe President Nixon’s intentions were honorable from the outset. It was believed that the best way to turn a country away from communism, is to let them get a taste of prosperity and freedom. Otherwise we would be forever at war with them, be it cold war or shooting war. Obviously it did not work out that way.

Now that President Trump is engaging North Korea, I believe his intentions are also good. But if, in subsequent years and decades, it all turns out to be like China, will you blame President Trump for the actions of people long after he is out of office?

I also believe Reagan fully understood the problem of illegal immigration and had the vision that this is never going to stop without some kind of compromise with the Democrats, a hard pill to swallow. He trusted Tip O’Neil, a big mistake he later regretted - but with a hostile media and hostile Democratic Party and a not-so-friendly RNC, did Reagan have a choice?

The Dems did not hold up their end of the bargain (surprise, surprise) and we have what you see today. Is it Ronald Reagan’s fault for the actions of subsequent Congresses and Presidents and Governors and even big city Mayors? I think not.

Just my opinion. I understand others disagree, even disagree strongly.

Nixon did that. Reagan ended the Cold War, and shortly thereafter, while Bush 41 was just getting the Oval Office swivel chair to fit him, the Berlin Wall came down and the Soviet Union collapsed. Truly earth shaking days to have witnessed.
