I reunited with long lost relatives and friends via Facebook. I have several friends who wound up in Facebook “jail” for posting the truth about Pelosi and Schumer, Clinton, Obama, etc. I do not post political stuff. I speak privately regarding that subject.
Today? It is a curse.
Back in 2008? It was a wonder of the internet. It was far more basic, spartan, and benign, though. It allowed many of us to find old friends we would have never seen again and see family members that simply were too far away to visit. It was honestly fun sharing old photos that we would otherwise never see.
But after 2011, it became a trashy, vile, conflict-ridden place, and the company went from Farmville to farming you.
These days I keep it only to occasionaly check on my nieces and nephews. See how my older relatives are doing, and to peek in on some old school friends. Otherwise I dont interact with it.
What you said is true, they tried to get my mom with that scam from Facebook. Several years ago we had a large extended family reunion, and the family member organizing it set up a page on facebook, where among other things they put up all sorts of family genealogies, photos, etc., which obviously revealed relationships, birth and death dates, etc. So my elderly mother starts getting telephone calls that one of my sons is in jail in the Dominican Republic and she needs to send them money to have him released. They knew the relationship, how old he was, etc.
Fortunately: (1) my Mom still has her marbles; (2) she knows my son is here, not in the Dominican Republic, and so she didn’t fall for it.
Bottom line is don’t put any personal or family information on Facebook. Hackers can get to it and do all sorts of mischief.
They might still track us, but you don’t have to make it easy for them.
I in aging that they can’t tell you the standard because it’s buried inside a constantly changing algoritm. On 7/4 people were complaining that FB was running real slow. Well, that was probably all the patriotic uploads getting banned or deleted I near real-time.
I got rid of it a year and a half ago.
Note that Fox still manages to get a dig in at Trump: “Woz deleted his account in 2018 after the Cambridge Analytica scandal resulted in people being harassed by the Trump campaign... “
I joined Facebook because I wanted to stop someone from joining there with DoughtyOne.
I signed up and locked down my account over ten years ago. I don’t use it. I go in and clear things that have been sent to me, and never respond.
I just got a 7 day ban for calling the KKK white trash. I kid you not.
I have a page but never post on it. Just check it once in a blue moon to see what drivel is coming in.
I always thought Woz was semi-cool with the whole Apple/ internet thing.
Ditto. Friends & family are on the other coast from my location. I check on them to see whats new. I also like being able to message them because of time zone problems.
If not for that, I’d give it up in a heartbeat.
up, do you know of a FB replacement site besides Gab? I won’t go there because the BO’s neurotic girlfriend doxxed me on that site.
I never did. Its seems like a fake life. JMHO.
Free Republic is my Facebook.
Its not what your doing on FB. Its what your looking at, reading, doing on other sites/platforms that FB doesnt agree with. Let that sink in. FB will take action based on behavior not on their site/platform.
Get THE DUCK OFF OF FB.
To "delete your account" FB requires you to log on to FB, and they won't let me log on. But even if they did and I "deleted" my account that wouldn't really delete anything.
my family is all over FB I want to see the posts
Good for you! I also still have a landline. However, a long time ago I was walking in my back yard near the utility pole under the wires with my portable phone (that wirelessly connects to a base connected to my landline), and I found I could listen in on other people's conversations! Weird! I don't know if it was because they also had portable phones similar to mine, but I could hear when walking under the telephone lines overhead. I never trusted my landline after that (and certainly don't trust cellphones although using one). Also replaced my wireless base system for the landline to a more secure one.
Just figure that you have no privacy with any electronics around.
