The United States Postal Service has introduced a new service that you may or may not find useful. Informed Delivery lets you preview the front exterior of incoming mail on your computer or phone; you can also track packages and leave delivery instructions for those packages.
This isnt something that the USPS has developed just for its customers. According to an FAQ on the post offices site, the USPS is already creating digital images of the front of your letter-sized mail; however, it is now making those images available to customers before the mail is actually delivered.
Once youve signed up for the service, and your address has been verified, you will receive an email from the USPS with up to ten grayscale images of the front of any letters that are on their way. If youve got more than ten pieces of mail coming, you can see them all using the online dashboard. Youll also get a list of packages, along with their tracking numbers.

I really don't want to see the mail after it arrives. During it's travel - nah.
When people in my area have to drive 10 miles round trip to get the mail it is useful to know if anything is there. If you are expecting something important you do not have to drive 10 miles a day to see if it it there.
The post office and yourself are not the only ones who can see that information. You can bet that the government has free access. And who knows who else. Think the FaceBook model.
The USPS lost $814 million in 2017.
Now I know why.
Or allow you the opportunity to have them not deliver items of mail. USPS would certainly benefit from not having to deliver all that junk mail. Let them toss it?
WOW. 10 feet is far here :)
It IS also useful for older folks in condos who have to go to the curb to get their mail.
As for me, I DONT WANT TO fret about ANY IRS or federal mail any longer than I have to!
This is a disaster for worriers :)
It’s bad enough I have to see it when it arrives. Why in God’s name would I want to see it beforehand? Most of it’s junk mail anyway. No wonder the postal service is bankrupt.
I was told that if you dont sign up your address, a bad guy could and then sit there watch for checks or credit cards coming in. My daughter signed up to watch ours and I know when to watch for important things... to make sure if they are delivered correctly. We finally got a good one again, but we had one that delivered stuff wtong all the time.
I’ve used this service for about six months and I like it.
Actually the post office will not deliver any mail here. UPS even drops packages off at the post office so I have to go 5 miles to pick them up also. Junk mail is a good fire starter for the wood stove in winter.
Yeah okay.. I'm stupid enough to fall for this deception.
I use it. My husband prefers a P O Box to a box on the street because that street is a mile from the house on a private lane. Our choice of P O Boxes are a 20 minute drive one way or the other. I watch for things that are important before we drive down.
There isn’t an option to delete any mail before you get it.
The machines are getting images of the mail anyway, so the machines can sort pieces without barcodes, so they were getting those images before the made them available to customers.
I’ve had this service for about a year now and it’s very useful, I know if something is in my PO box.
It's not done to help YOU. It's done to help THEM SNOOP ON YOU.
Yes sir
The government is tracking every form of communication and everywhere the citizens go.
Free Country?
HA!
Yep. I use it, too to see when it is worth checking the PO BOX.
“USPS would certainly benefit from not having to deliver all that junk mail.”
Just the opposite. It requires less processing than other mail and actually subsidizes first class.
Not that there is much first class mail anymore. The internet took away a huge quantity of what used to be done by first class mail. USPS has migrated into parcel delivery.
Southern California used to be a gold mine for the post office. Mail volume in SoCal was so big it supported postal operations in several other states.
They scan it anyway like it or not. I like it because I know if I need to go down to the road to get my mail.
The machines are getting images of the mail anyway, so the machines can sort pieces without barcodes, so they were getting those images before the made them available to customers.
++++++++++++++
and the informaion is all saved, so every piece of mail you get is tracked and archieved.
