Donald Trump rarely admits a mistake, much less an overstatement, so well take the regret he expressed Thursday at the chant of send her back during his Wednesday rally as the moral equivalent of an apology. Lets hope his supporters get the message, and that Mr. Trump stops egging them on.
The crowd in North Carolina broke into chants of send her back after Mr. Trump lambasted Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar for hating America. Mr. Trump had used the words go back in a tweet earlier in the week, and the crowds chant shows how easily an ill-thought presidential comment can inspire ugly expressions of mass psychology.
The best that can be said is that the chant echoed the 2016 calls of lock her up regarding Hillary Clinton, and it may have begun in that raucous partisan spirit. But Wednesdays chant was meaner in targeting Ms. Omar not merely for what she has said but as a naturalized citizen who should be banished from the U.S. The impulse is raw nativism.
Mr. Trump isnt the first President to indulge in such group-targeted demagoguery. FDR railed in his 1932 campaign against the Ishmaels and the Insulls, whose hand is against every mans. That was an anti-Semitic jibe against disgraced Chicago utilities magnate Samuel Insull, and the press corps at the time cheered Roosevelt on.
This time the chant was widely denounced, and not merely by the anti-Trump chorus. Mark Walker, a North Carolina Republican who was at the rally, tweeted afterward: Though it was brief, I struggled with the send her back chant tonight referencing Rep. Omar. Her history, words & actions reveal her great disdain for both America & Israel. That should be our focus and not phrasing thats painful to our friends in the minority communities.

Very bothered by Trump backing down on this...
Don’t worry it’ll happen again... .
I haven’t seen any direct quotes from Trump...just some story about what the family supposedly said to Trump.
BALONY
“and that Mr. Trump stops egging them on.”
Trump made a HUGE mistake. He never should have denounced the chant. It gave the rats and MSM exactly what they wanted. Now we have been painted as racist and he helped.
Sure FR newbie, anything you say.
“Trump made a HUGE mistake. He never should have denounced the chant. It gave the rats and MSM exactly what they wanted. Now we have been painted as racist and he helped.”
LOL! You guys are REALLY trying hard, arent you?
Even repeating the same phrases.
Go on, tell us how ANGRY you are. Huff puff! Huuuuurumph!
Trump was advised by legal that for the immigration prosecution of Illicit Mullah Omar he couldn’t be perceived as tainying the case.
Tell the neo-Nazi propagandist pukes at the WSJ that they’re not immune from charges of treason. They can write an editorial about what happened to Julius Streicher.
If you cannot see that Trump made a mistake here you are blinded by loyalty IMHO.
The problem is that what Trump said is dangerously close to an “apology”.
Very bothered by Trump backing down on this...

I just posted the same thought on the another thread. If there was ever a time to back down, it is NOT now when it involves that vile woman.
I think he knew the optics would be distorted by the Fake News Media, but the intent was 100% right on!
It was a funny chant, so what?
I got a message for you, WSJ...GFY.
“If you cannot see that Trump made a mistake blah blah blah...”
Oh bullsh*it, crybaby.
We have bigger things to concentrate on to be whining about a chant like some 20 year old chick with PMS.
Like what the hell is wrong with some of you? Gay people have a thicker skin than some of you over stuff like this. Democrats keep trudging, you are sitting here blubbering.
If you think the situation in the nation is so awesome that this is what you have time to sperg-out about, then you are blinded by you heads up your rears, and need a reality check upside the head.
So GET THE F$%@ OVER IT!
And; in the very same tweet, PRESIDENT Trump had used the words come back; but the media seems to overlook those words.
Blah blah blah
Uh...
...there is no ‘confusion’ involved.
There are bigger issues than your GD chant.

We have no problem with the chant. Actually strongly applaud it. What is disappointing and uncharacteristic is Trump’s response:
I started speaking really quickly, he told reporters Thursday. I was not happy with it. I disagree with it and would certainly try to stop any similar chant at a future rally
You better get going you’ll be late for school.
