“Next up, Coulton shot an AR-15 with .223 caliber rounds, and it easily pierced its way through the back. The product description makes no mention of tests against this kind of rifle.”

****

so it’s effective?

That would make an interesting, even entertaining Samsonite Luggage commercial.
No one would dare to produce it, though.

Interestingly... my family actually bought me one of these things... because they say I'm notoriously difficult to buy gifts for. Actually, my laptop "back pack" was a DoD issued "assault pack", which is rugged as hell, but woodland cammo BDU, and my wife hated it. So they bought me this bulletproof thing.

All in all, I like it. It's got more room than the assault pack and more compartments. I don't think it's going to be quite as rugged though, and when it does break, I'll switch back to the issued pack.

I was however a little shocked to discover that parents were buying these things for their kids. I mean, it just doesn't compute. Does it make a parent "feel better" knowing they've bought their kid some kevlar through which they might have a bit of an advantage in a dangerous environment?... or do we as parents have an obligation to simply NOT send the kid into a dangerous situation? Why not give them a REAL advantage and send them out with a Glock-19? But both are stupid and dangerous and everybody knows it. The fact that there's even a market for this product with children is simply amazing. Moreover this though is that it illustrates the sheer numbers of "sheep" in this nation who will buy them for kids!...and feel "good" about it?! That's f'd up!

DIY bullet resistant panel for a backpack

1 - create a template from cardboard that fits the inside of the backpack, closet to the back

2 - cut 6 layers of either fiberglass/carbon fiber/ kevlar / or other high tensile strength fabric to match the template

3 - cut 1 shape from 16 gage steel

4 - layer the fabric so that the fabric is at a 30 or 45 degree offset. Put the steel plate under the top layer of fabirc

5 - Us high strength fiberglas epoxy and push the epoxy into each layer so that the whole set of layers has expoxy in the fabric and between the layers

6 - press the template together and hold in place until the expoxy sets

7 - trim the excess, smo0th the edges, apply a layer of spray paint of a color that blends with the backpack.

8 - insert into the backpack so that the metal plate side is facing away from the child.

Using Kevlar, I have seen this stop pistols and shotgun rounds. Based on that performance, I believe it would stop the first .223 round. Now that I have my AR, I will have to test this at the range again.

After the white flight out of Dallas and all the new immigrants, of course they need bulletproof backpacks.

Is the fact that you’d consider buying them a bullet proof back pack for your kid for school, going to be enough to convince some parents that they shouldn’t be sending their kids there?

Not likely but maybe a few will reconsider.

Making money off of paranoia. The modern fallout shelter. Mathematically speaking any randomly selected child (ie, “yours”) will not be involved in a school shooting. They also will not win the lottery. That’s just how it is. But getting you to understand that math is highly profitable.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

I thought the schools were leaning more toward clear backpacks, banning extraneous jackets, etc., so as to reduce the chance of kids being armed or toting bombs, etc.

Textbooks would probably stop a lot of rounds. Those are probably too heavy for the kids, though.

I’ve not heard of kids getting shot on the way to school, or home from school.

Wouldn’t their backpacks be in their lockers during school hours? Or do kids tote them around all day, now?

We had to carry our books and notebooks and pencil cases to and from class IN OUR ARMS like the BARBARIANS we were, LOL!

Of course, we kept our guns, ammo and knives locked in the trunks of our cars out in the parking lot. We only had about two hours to hunt small game or fish after school before we had to be home for chores - which usually involved more sharp agricultural instruments, LOL!

To pull a knife or a gun on someone you had a disagreement with at school was CHEATING! NO ONE would do that! Ever! Fist fights, or hair-pulling cat-fights for the girls. (Those, of course, were the best.)

So, an easy way to put together your own bullet proof vest at home where they’re not legal to buy otherwise, huh? Throw in some of the Mythbusters tips and you’re looking good.

COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY!

1) Several school districts do not allow kids to carry their backpacks into the classrooms.
2) Most kids who use backpacks have them hung on hooks away from their person and/or in their locker.

The one plus is these things stop most handgun rounds, which CONTRARY to the news report, are the most commonly used weapons in school shootings. AR-15’s are used less than 33% of the time in school shootings! Handguns and shotguns are much more common, so if they have their backpack with them, they MAY have a better chance to survive.

They’ve been around in one form or another for 25 years. They were popular in Detroit at least that long ago.
